About The Position

The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes while providing excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment. They are expected to promote member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures under the direct supervision of the Director of Health and Wellness. The instructor will demonstrate the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in all interactions with employees, members, staff and others all while committing to ongoing professional development.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Working knowledge of body mechanics and physical fitness principles.
  • Certifications in CPR, First Aid, and AED (or the ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Current nationally recognized group exercise certification (SCA, ASCM, ACE, AFAA, NSCA, NETA, NASM, AAAI/ISMA, or WITS) keeping them current by meeting continuing education requirements or in alignment with certification requirements.
  • Attend the Ocean County YMCA New Hire Orientation.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with youth and adults.
  • Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work morning, afternoon, evening, or weekends.
  • Attend and participate in all required staff meetings and continuing job training.

Responsibilities

  • Lead energizing, safe, and motivating group classes, as directed by the Director of Health and Wellness to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Is knowledgeable and stays updated on current issues and trends related to group fitness and wellness programs.
  • Responsible for providing participants with proper safety techniques and a stimulating exercise session.
  • Meets class participation goal while contributing to the member retention rate.
  • Secure your own music and select music that is suitable for a family setting.
  • Create a friendly and welcoming environment for participants of all backgrounds and abilities.
  • Cultivate relationships by establishing a positive rapport with members, participants, volunteers, and staff.
  • Create a sense of belonging for the members and participants by encouraging them to connect with others.
  • Educate participants about the services the Ocean County YMCA offers and further connect them to the organization.
  • Puts members first by engaging with them before and after class, welcoming new members to classes, and addressing questions and concerns with exceptional service and adequate follow through in a timely manner.
  • Assists as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its community.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations, documenting all incidents.
  • Secure your own substitute in a timely manner if unable to teach a scheduled class.
  • Ensures that the substitute is approved by the Director before being relieved of responsibility for the class.
  • Logs class attendance.
  • Be able to complete payroll on time each week using Paycom (mobile app, computer, or kiosk).
  • Create a culture of volunteerism by educating members about volunteer opportunities.
  • Support a culture of philanthropy by telling your Y story to others and encouraging them to participate in OCYMCA fundraising efforts.
  • Encourage members and celebrate their success in meeting their well-being goals.
  • Nurture the potential of all participants by promoting meaningful programs and services.
