About The Position

The Group Exercise Instructor (GXI) will lead members, in a group environment, through a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength and endurance, while ensuring the safety of the members. The GXI will also serve as a resource to educate members on various aspects of fitness. The GXI will report directly to the Regional Fitness Programming Manager.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of safe exercise techniques and group exercise principles
  • Knowledge of basic physiology and body mechanics
  • Performance of a variety of exercise routines
  • Positive and effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot audio equipment
  • Instructors must provide verifiable proof of education/certification for specialized skill formats they will be instructing (e.g. Yoga, Pilates, Senior Fitness Specific - Silver Sneakers, ASHLink, Silver & Fit, etc.)
  • Must have company-approved current national GXI certification
  • Must have/obtain CPR AED certification and basic first-aid training
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common business-related documents such as membership agreements.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to members.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive at class location 10 to 15 minutes ahead of scheduled start time to interact with members, answer questions, inquire about their fitness progress, introduce and orient new participants.
  • Know participants on an individual basis and have a good sense of their fitness capabilities.
  • Ensure clothing is appropriate fitness attire and adheres to COVID-19/CDC guidelines, is not revealing in an inappropriate manner, and allows participants to see proper form, alignment, and movement of the body. Proper footwear should be worn at all times.
  • Prepare appropriate music for class, refraining from using music with offensive language.
  • Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and have microphones ready.
  • Participate in events to promote class formats as needed throughout the year.
  • Introduce yourself and the format of the class.
  • Inquire if there are any “first-timers” in the group and assess their fitness level in as private a manner as possible.
  • Make sure all verbal instructions are clear and that the volume, tempo of music, and overall atmosphere is conducive to hearing, teaching, learning, and having fun.
  • Continually monitor participants to ensure all participants are using correct form.
  • Offer variations of the routine to accommodate all fitness levels.
  • Create a motivational and fun environment for all participants.
  • Uphold Fitness Connection’s Mission and Values by delivering group exercise classes that meet or exceed company standards based on COVID-19/CDC guidelines.
  • Engage in opportunities to positively interact with members.
  • Remove all music and return the microphone to the proper place after class.
  • Make sure the room is in order for the next class to begin.
  • Answer any questions/concerns participants may have after class.
  • Solicit feedback from participants about the class.
  • Ensure that class begins and ends promptly.
  • Make adjustments to the flow of the class to ensure adherence to the schedule if necessary.
  • Follow proper closing procedures as outlined by the GXD for the individual facility if teaching the last class of the day.
  • Find a qualified/approved substitute and notify the GXD if unable to fulfill a scheduled class.
  • Be dependable and consistent in class schedules.
  • Attend all required staff meetings as necessary.
  • Ensure that proper time recording procedures are followed correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Prepare any incident and/or witness reports as necessary in the event of accidents.
  • Maintain a positive and professional attitude towards responsibilities, fellow employees, and members.
  • Promote COVID-19/CDC adherence, Fitness Connection, and the Fitness Connection Group Exercise program as much as possible.
