About The Position

Under the supervision of the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the group exercise instructor is responsible for instructing safe, effective, and fun group exercise classes. This role also involves enhancing the quality and growth of the program and retaining participants in fitness programs. The group exercise instructor will assist the Fitness Coordinator/Director or Branch Director with various branch activities such as special events and other activities that occur on various occasions. Responsibilities include developing member relationships, increasing program development, and increasing member retention.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Current or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire: Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/Blood Borne Pathogens/First Aid certification. Must be maintained
  • Must hold a current national certification from one of the following national accrediting agencies with a nationally recognized organization such as ACSM, ACE, AFAA, ISSA, IFTA, NSCA, NETA. If outside of these organizations, you may submit a request to consider approval.
  • Must maintain nationally recognized certification in the type of class you are teaching.
  • Must be willing to teach a minimum of one regular scheduled group exercise classes per week.
  • Must maintain all appropriate certifications and provide copies of all certifications and required CEC’s to fitness director or branch director each year.
  • Instructors teaching specialty classes such as Cycle, Pilates, Yoga, Zumba, Les Mills etc. must hold a current certification in the specialty taught.
  • Excellent human relations and communication skills
  • Team player (be willing to substitute teach for other instructors)

Responsibilities

  • Provide a safe and effective workout for the class format scheduled.
  • Supervise and guide the participants through a workout that incorporates appropriate warm-up, cardiovascular endurance/strength, cool down, and stretch. Be aware of the various abilities of the participants and potential problems associated with form.
  • Provides a safe and clean environment by keeping workout area clean and free of obstacles. All equipment/mats should be cleaned and put away before you leave.
  • Arrives at the branch YMCA in a timely manner in order to clock or sign in and make necessary preparations to teach the class.
  • Demonstrate variations or modifications to encourage participants.
  • Report to supervisor any equipment that is not working properly. Describe what the problem is and when it happened.
  • Know and follow emergency procedures as situations warrant. Incident forms should be completed for any accidents/injuries that occur. Reports should be submitted to your supervisor or the Branch Directors before leaving the facility.
  • Start and finish classes on time. If unable to teach a scheduled class, instructor will find a substitute to cover classes that you are assigned.
  • Use appropriate music and clothing. Music selections should not contain offensive language.
  • Encourage the practice of healthy lifestyles, NOT special diets or supplements.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings, special events, and/or Launches.
  • Keeps classes fresh by incorporating new music, and exercises or movement patterns to classes.
  • Developing member relations and member involvement.
  • Providing individualized exercise and fitness instruction based on the overall needs of the class.
  • Speaks positively about other instructors and programs to members.
  • Developing member relations and member involvement, willingness to problem solve and not encourage members to submit complaints, but rather elevate feedback to leadership.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
