The Group Ex Instructor leads group fitness classes in accordance with the class description and YMCA standards. The instructor should present a clean, well-groomed appearance; maintain a positive, enthusiastic, and empowering attitude; motivate and encourage participants; and be prepared to teach, including knowing the routine and music, using proper technique and cueing, explaining modifications, and knowing how to operate class equipment such as the stereo and microphone. Instructors are expected to deliver a welcoming, safe, and engaging member experience. This includes introducing themselves, taking heart rates twice during class, demonstrating and encouraging modifications, keeping participants moving, and helping beginners feel comfortable while explaining heart-rate ranges and supporting their technique, choreography, and form. Instructors should learn members’ names, remain approachable and courteous, and respectfully correct improper exercise technique. Instructors must arrive five minutes before class, start and finish on time, and return class materials and equipment after use. They are responsible for arranging a substitute when unable to teach and notifying the group exercise coordinator. They must attend staff meetings and a new employee orientation within 30 days of hire, support YMCA programs and services and Annual Campaign activities, and maintain current CPR and AED certifications and an accepted fitness instructor certification. Performance is evaluated annually on presentation, class performance, and technical aptitude, and quarterly on customer service expectations. Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug screen is stated as a requirement. Duties are subject to reasonable accommodation and may be modified or supplemented by management.
