About The Position

The Parkinson’s Exercise Class Instructor plays an important role in supporting participants, instructors, and caregivers in the Foundation YMCA’s Parkinson’s exercise program. Instructors help create a safe, welcoming, and encouraging environment where individuals living with Parkinson’s disease can improve their strength, mobility, confidence, and overall well-being. Working alongside other class instructors, the incumbent will assist with program operations, participant engagement, and transportation needs to ensure each class runs smoothly.

Requirements

  • Group Exercise Certification and/or degree in Exercise Science or other acceptable degree.
  • Passion for serving others and supporting individuals living with Parkinson’s disease.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with instructors, staff, participants, and caregivers.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
  • Dependable and punctual with a commitment to maintaining participant safety and confidentiality.
  • Must complete all required YMCA training and background screening processes.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with older adults, individuals with Parkinson’s disease, or fitness and wellness programs is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Create and teach a safe and effective class for participants.
  • Support other instructors during class by standing with participants, helping manage the flow of activities, and providing additional assistance with exercise instruction as needed.
  • Monitor participant safety by observing movement patterns and watching for signs of fatigue, instability, or discomfort.
  • Provide gentle assistance, modifications, or adjustments when appropriate and communicate any concerns promptly to class instructors.
  • Encourage and engage participants by offering positive reinforcement, motivation, and support throughout each session.
  • Foster a sense of community, confidence, and belonging among individuals living with Parkinson’s disease and their caregivers.
  • Assist with the setup and breakdown of equipment and help prepare the exercise space before and after class.
  • Support the transportation of participants to and from class areas as needed.
  • Create and maintain an inclusive, respectful, and nonjudgmental environment for all participants, caregivers, staff, and fellow volunteers.
  • Adhere to all Foundation YMCA policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
