Under immediate supervision of the Manager for Grounds, the Groundsworker performs general gardening work and maintains the grounds in an assigned area of a campus. Under guidance of the lead groundsworker, performs a broad range of groundskeeping duties, including but not limited to, planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns and flowers. Mows and edges lawns. Rakes leaves, hoes weeds, and cleans trash from assigned areas including parking lots. Prepares and treats soils for planting. Operates and maintains equipment and tools for grounds and pest control operations; operates all equipment properly, following proper procedures including safety precautions; services equipment accordingly. Performs pruning, thinning and constructing supports for trees and shrubs. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with tree trimming, or nursery functions. Proper techniques are used and proficiency is demonstrated for this task. Planting and maintaining turf, shrubs, and trees. May occasionally assist a qualified specialist with sprinkler repair and performs minor sprinkler repair. General cleanup. Assures that work stations are kept clean and neat, all tools and equipment are properly stored and the general area is kept free of trash and litter. State employees may be required to serve as a disaster service worker and participate in disaster recovery efforts. Other classification-related duties as assigned. May drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties.
