About The Position

California State University, Fullerton’s Facilities Management seeks a Groundsworker for its Landscape Services team. Under the general supervision of the Landscape Services Manager or designee, the Groundsworker performs general gardening and landscape maintenance in assigned campus areas, including fields, lawns, trees, shrubs, raised beds, parking lots, and parking structures. The position supports campus beautification and the university’s learning environment through safe, organized, dependable, and high-quality work. It requires courteous customer service, teamwork, initiative, and care in the proper use of personal protective equipment. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
General knowledge of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and of the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
Ability to recognize common species of ornamental shrubs, trees, and flowers grown in California.
Ability to perform strenuous physical work, use mechanical aptitude and motor coordination, and learn to operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment skillfully.
Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties and follow simple oral and written instructions.
One year of experience caring for and maintaining landscaped areas, performing general grounds maintenance, or related manual labor.
Valid California driver’s license.
Satisfactory completion of a required background check, including a criminal records check.
Ability to perform manual labor for an extended period and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 pounds, with or without accommodation, as needed.
Ability to discriminate colors.
Regular attendance is an essential job function.

Nice To Haves

Previous landscape experience at a large facility.
Ability to operate small-engine-powered equipment, large turf equipment, a skip loader, tractors, and a forklift with up to 3,000-pound capacity.
Knowledge of sports turf and sports fields.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
Ability to read and write in English to understand and follow verbal instructions, communicate with coworkers and customers, work with customers, and direct the work of others.
Ability to use a computer and enter information.
