Cal State Fullerton currently provides residence hall and apartment style living for approximately 2,200 students that is safe, clean, and very convenient. We seek an exceptional individual to join our Housing-Custodial Services team as the Groundsworker. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to inclusivity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
  • General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers, and the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment.
  • Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California.
  • Perform strenuous physical work as described in this classification.
  • Utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination.
  • Learn to skillfully operate small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment.
  • Read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
  • Follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor.
  • A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment.
  • A valid California driver’s license.
  • A live scan is required.
  • Must comply with the requirement outlined in CSU Executive Order 1083, revised July 21, 2017, as a mandated reporter.
  • Applicants will be required to disclose whether they have received a final administrative decision or final judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last 7 years only after a determination is made that they meet the minimum qualifications for the position, and before an offer of employment is extended.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of tasks related to the care, maintenance, and beautification of campus grounds and landscaped areas.
  • Planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and spraying ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers.
  • Rake leaves, remove weeds, clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots, and prepare and treat soils for planting.
  • Maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, and equipment in proper condition and repair.
  • Trim trees, hedges, and shrubs; and erect tree supports.
  • Operates and performs minor maintenance on small and medium-size power mowers, riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment.
  • May occasionally assist qualified specialists in sprinkler repair, spraying, or tree trimming.
  • May provide lead work direction to students or unskilled assistants.
  • May perform minor repairs; sweeping or power blowing grounds, including exterior walkways, seating areas, bike and trash enclosures, and recreational areas.
  • Maintaining irrigation systems, performing minor sprinkler head repairs, and setting automatic control devices as needed.
  • Fertilizing and applying chemicals in assigned areas on an occasional basis.
  • Performing incidental tree trimming and maintenance work.
  • Other duties as assigned.
