About The Position

As the Fort Worth Botanic Garden Groundskeeper, you will have essential responsibilities that help maintain the Garden's appearance, health, and guest experience. This work supports horticulturists, living collections, and other staff in highlighting and preserving plant collections. Working as part of a team is an essential skill in this role as Groundskeepers take direction from their manager, horticulturists, and those managing special event setups. Groundskeepers play a crucial role in ensuring that the garden remains beautiful and safe, thereby enhancing the overall experience for everyone. The duties require knowledge of plants, soil, equipment, and safe landscaping practices.

Requirements

  • 2 years' experience in landscaping or closely related field including maintenance and ground keeping tasks.
  • Knowledge of proper techniques and uses of a variety of hand and power tools and machinery with ability to use various tools, assigned equipment, and heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices including the use of PPE.
  • Physically able to perform strenuous manual labor tasks related to assigned responsibilities in Texas weather.
  • Basic computer and mobile phone app skills for benefits enrollment, time reporting, and electronic communication.
  • Every FWBG employee is expected to possess and be willing to use a mobile device for timekeeping and business communications via calls/texts/emails/Teams’ messages.
  • Be adaptable and flexible to changing schedules, including occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Ability to support and participate in FWBG public exhibitions and events.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for maintaining assigned areas: mow, trim, edge, and aerate lawns; prune shrubs and trees; remove dead and damaged plants; rake leaves, mulch planting beds, and keep paths and open areas clear of weeds and debris.
  • Areas of support for the horticulture team responsibilities include irrigation, hardscape, weeding, pest and fertility management, waste removal, and seasonal preparations.
  • Ensure the success of private and public events by maintaining the aesthetics, safety, and functionality of event spaces.
  • Collaborate closely with horticulturists, managers, and landscape designers to ensure outdoor spaces meet aesthetic and ecological goals.
  • Continuously improve knowledge through attending and participating in training workshops and seminars, staff and organizational training, and utilizing digital resources.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and the Garden's Core Values while engaging with guests, interacting with coworkers and managers, and handling conflict effectively.
  • Regularly collaborate with employee or volunteer teams and provide precise instructions for tasks like planting, pruning, or clean up including demonstration of techniques when needed.
  • Encourage job feedback/suggestions from team members, showing respect for their input.
  • Engage in all campus communication methods to stay informed and share information. This includes email, MS Teams, texts, calls, and newsletters.
  • Communicate with others clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate personal understanding of oral and written instructions.
