About The Position

This is a registration recruitment with no examination. Persons who qualify will be placed on the registration list in accordance with their availability to work in the various geographical districts on the Island of Hawai'i and conditions of employment. The registration list will be used for Groundskeeper I permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Requirements

  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at the time of filing.
  • Knowledge of the care and cultivation of shrubs, flowers, trees, and lawns.
  • Knowledge of operation and care of grounds maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate hand and power equipment and tools used in grounds maintenance.
  • Ability to learn safety practices and precautions applicable to work.
  • Ability to maintain simple records.
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, trims, maintains and cultivates landscaped grounds, hedges, lawns, adjacent sidewalks, other paved and unpaved areas, and overhanging shrubbery/branches.
  • Uses hand and power tools and cares for and maintains lawns, hedges, trees, access roadways, and shrubbery by cleaning, watering, fertilizing, spraying herbicide/insecticide, trimming, pruning, mowing, sweeping, and raking.
  • Plants shrubbery and plants, sods lawns, and propagates plants and shrubs from seeds, cuttings, and roots.
  • Operates light motorized or power equipment, such as power lawn mowers, and tools, such as edgers, trimmers and weeders, as required.
  • May make minor maintenance repairs to such equipment.
  • Collects and disposes of trash, rubbish, cuttings, branches, etc.
  • May operate an automobile or truck in the performance of duties.
  • Assists in the various trades as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
