What You’ll Do: Works under direction & requires thorough knowledge of groundskeeping Act as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction and training) over lower-level workers (e.g., groundskeeper 1, groundskeeper 2, maintenance repair worker 1) and/or inmates in the propagation, grooming, maintenance, preparation, cultivation and/or other groundskeeping tasks required to care for turf, lawns, trees, shrubs and/or flowers Participates in herbicidal spraying Removes, installs, and maintains plant materials Prunes, mulches, waters, applies insecticides, pesticides and/or fertilizers Transplants trees Mows lawns; plants and prepares flower beds Re-moves trash and leaves from grounds, trims hedges Repairs erosion problems. Monitors lower-level workers or inmates in cleaning of walks, roads, and parking areas through removal of ice, snow and/or litter Performs record keeping, documentation and/or reporting tasks, orders materials, supplies and equipment Maintains records regarding care and planting of trees, shrubs and/or flowers Informs supervisor of materials needed for planting (e.g., seeds, seedlings, trees, bulbs, plants, bushes and fertilizer) Monitors subordinates and/or participates in maintenance and repair of equipment (e.g., landscape equipment), machinery, walks, roads, parking areas and/or shelters and performs other miscellaneous tasks as assigned (e.g., assists maintenance department workers in repair of water lines and/or electrical steam lines installed underground) Assumes duties of supervisor in his/her absence Inspects contract projects of herbicidal spraying, tree removal or turf fertilization Participates in removal of dead animals. Serves on institutional committees Attends training, seminars and/or meetings as required Performs security functions as required (e.g., man-down, shakedown, inmate movement)

Requirements

  • Formal education in English & arithmetic that includes reading, writing & speaking English & fractions, decimals & percentages
  • 12 mos. trg. or 12 mos. exp. in groundskeeping activities & use of associated equipment (e.g., applying sprays, planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, snow removal)
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.
  • Or 6 mos. exp. as Groundskeeper 2, 53612.
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by Sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.
  • Or alternative, equivalent evidence of the Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment quoted above.

Responsibilities
