About The Position

The Campus Services Department invites applications for a Grounds Supervisor. The Grounds Supervisor plans and assigns work, oversees the daily activities of the grounds crew, and exercises independent judgment in prioritizing tasks, resolving operational issues, and ensuring work is completed efficiently and in accordance with established standards. Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of experience as a laborer, farmer, gardener, florist helper, groundskeeper, or similar work involving general laborer duties which may include the planting and maintenance of vegetation, landscaping duties, nursery inspections, or pesticide applications.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • General knowledge of soils and turf grass management.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and perform general maintenance on equipment
  • Ability to understand and use hand tools, climb ladders, operate mowers, tractors, forklifts, aerifiers, top dressers, and vertical mowers
  • Ability to use computers with general knowledge of using spreadsheet software for logging applications and inventory management
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, efficient individual
  • Flexible individual with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds and sustain the weight of a backpack blower for an extended period of time
  • Ability to follow directions and adhere to schedules
  • Ability to maintain a professional and respectful demeanor/attitude with coaching staff, coworkers, students, athletes, fans, and vendors
  • Ability to engage effectively with others of diverse cultures or backgrounds
  • Ability to work a non-standard work week, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays to support campus needs.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns work to grounds crew; reviews job performance by observing and critiquing work techniques and completed assignments.
  • Trains crew in the work involving landscaping and maintenance of grounds.
  • Cleans, repairs, and services all equipment used in grounds maintenance such as mowers, tractor/trailers, dump trucks, front-end loaders, high-lift fork trucks, wood chippers, snow plows, salt spreaders, and a variety of hand/power tools.
  • Plants and trims lawns, trees, bushes, hedges, annuals, and shrubs using hand tools or motorized vehicles.
  • Landscapes new ground areas, repairs damaged ground areas, replaces bushes, hedges, shrubs, and trees.
  • Cares for and maintains color beds. Produces and cares for nursery stock; fertilizes soil when needed for plant growth; plants flowerbeds.
  • Applies herbicide and pesticide chemicals to grounds, trees, bushes, shrubs, and lawns in order to control weeds, fungus, plant diseases and insects.
  • Orders supplies for all aspects of groundskeeping; e.g., equipment parts, blades, herbicides, pesticides, flowers, bushes, or trees.
  • Drives vehicles such as a car, truck, or van to pick up supplies and materials.
