About The Position

Western Colorado University is a residential, public university with an enrollment of 3,000 students. The Grounds & Nursery work unit maintains, repairs, and improves University grounds, athletic fields, roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. The work unit operates the computerized irrigation system, provides operational support for special events, moves furnishings, removes snow, and repairs equipment and vehicles. This work unit is housed within the Campus Operations department, which is responsible for the creation and maintenance of on-campus environments that foster academic and research excellence.

Requirements

  • Three (3) years of relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position.

  • Demonstrated competence with Microsoft Office programs and/or centralized IT systems to review budgets, staffing transactions, time tracking, absence requests, work orders, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, plans, and manages grounds maintenance work for campus.
  • Oversees the fertilization, irrigation, mowing, planting, pruning, horticultural, landscape, and hardscape maintenance for campus.
  • Directs weed spraying program and application of herbicides and insecticides.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of the computerized central control irrigation system.
  • Clears parking lots, sidewalks, lawns, and athletic fields of trash and debris.
  • Supervises and directs the work of regular, temporary, and student Grounds employees.
  • Operates heavy equipment including mowers, sweepers, tractors, backhoes, water trucks, dump trucks, and snowplows.
  • Directs and conducts snow removal operations for campus.
  • Operates snow removal equipment such as snow blowers and pickup trucks equipped with snowplows.
  • Uses hand tools to remove snow and ice from stairs, walks, and ramps.
  • Distributes/applies sand, gravel, and ice melt.
  • Shovels/removes snow from sidewalks, steps, buildings, and equipment, as needed.
  • Executes work orders and performs data entry in the electronic work order system.
  • Tracks and logs hours dedicated to work orders.
  • Tracks and logs materials used.
  • Maintains records needed for material purchases.
  • Inputs work order notes and status updates.
  • Leads Grounds staff to support special events and activities on campus.
  • Moves furniture, supplies, displays, and equipment (for example, tables, chairs, staging, tents, barricade fencing, etc.) for campus events and staff members.
  • Assists with the moving of office furniture and desks, as needed.
