Grounds Maintenance Worker
About The Position
Performs responsible semiskilled work in a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance assignments; frequently operates specialized and other equipment in connection with the tasks to which assigned; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor. This role may require occasional overtime and after-hours work as needed. Due to the essential nature of this position, the employee must be available for contact and may be required to report on-site during emergency situations. This is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy.
Requirements
- General knowledge of the use of common hand and specialized power tools
- General knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used in landscaping grounds maintenance
- Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned
- Ability to perform labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- Graduation from high school or equivalent
- Some experience as a semiskilled worker in grounds maintenance and in the operation of motorized equipment is strongly preferred
- Possession of a valid "Class A" commercial driver's license (CDL) is desirable
- Requires pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
- Some overtime and after-hours work is required
- Worker must be available for contact and on-site assistance in emergency situations

Responsibilities
- Mowing, seeding, planting, pruning, trimming, spraying and fertilizing grass, trees, shrubs, bushes, hedges and flowers
- Performing a variety of landscaping and grounds maintenance activities
- Operating, maintaining and repairing equipment
- Performs a variety of tasks in the maintenance of parks, playing fields and other public areas
- Sows and mows grass; plants, prunes and trims trees, shrubs and bushes
- Rakes and collects leaves; sprays pesticides
- Plants flowers; applies fertilizer
- Maintains and repairs irrigation systems
- Maintains ball fields; prepares fields for games; ensures fields are ready for games
- Prepares parks for special events; maintains baseball, softball and football fields; repairs playground equipment
- Participates in inclement weather operations
- Edges sidewalks, borders and plant beds; trims weeds, grass and hedges
- Operates mowers, tractors, dump truck and hand tools in performance of tasks
- Performs related tasks as required
