About The Position

The Grounds Maintenance Laborer maintains assigned grounds such as buildings, camp and picnic grounds, parks, playgrounds, and athletic fields, and repairs structures and equipment. This role involves operating various grounds equipment, performing maintenance and minor repairs, planting and caring for vegetation, and ensuring the cleanliness and safety of outdoor areas.

Requirements

  • 1 year or more experience in this field.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Valid GSA operator’s license.
  • Skill in the proper operation and maintenance of grounds maintenance tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Ability to lift and carry grounds supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to perform prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching on a daily basis.
  • Full range of physical motion in order to operate manual, electrically powered and/or gasoline-powered grounds equipment and machines.
  • Ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet.
  • Able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year-round.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, minor repairs to facilities, and operating small equipment.
  • Perform work in conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing sand and dust, working in confined spaces and at heights while standing for long periods of time.
  • The ability to read English language sufficiently to understand written work orders and instructions.

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Cut grass using walking-type or riding mowers, and zero-turn mowers (less than 2000 lbs.).
  • Operate electrically powered and gasoline-powered grounds equipment and machines.
  • Use small hand and power tools or equipment for grounds maintenance.
  • Perform maintenance on equipment and tools, and make minor repairs as directed.
  • Trim hedges and edges around walks, flowerbeds, and wells.
  • Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth.
  • Spray lawn, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer or insecticide.
  • Plant grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Water lawn and shrubs during dry periods using a hose or sprinkler system.
  • Pick up and dispose of leaves, paper, or other litter.
  • Remove snow from walks, driveways, roads, or parking lots using a shovel and snow blower.
  • Spread salt on walkways and other areas.
  • Repair and paint fences, gates, benches, tables, guardrails, and outbuildings.
  • Assist in the repair of roads, walks, and buildings.
  • Clean comfort stations, offices, workshop areas, and parking lots by sweeping, washing, mopping, and polishing.
  • Perform other duties as required.
