This position is responsible for keeping the District’s grounds in such a state of operating excellence that present no problems or interruptions to the educational program or District marketing ability. The Grounds Keeper will prepare seeding or transplanting beds by cultivating soil if needed. They will plant seeds, bulbs, trees, and shrubbery so that resulting growth will produce an attractive appearance. Pruning trees and trimming hedges to promote growth and improve appearance and maintain line of site are also key duties. The Grounds Keeper will inspect flowers, shrubs, and trees for evidence of insects, fungi, and other pests. Adjusting and repairing equipment such as lawnmowers and sprinklers, and collecting and disposing of leaves, landscape refuse and other rubbish are also responsibilities. The role involves operating various equipment including gators, front end loaders, dump trucks, towing trailers, and turf mowers, as well as basic garden tools like power edgers, augers, post hole diggers, rototillers, and chainsaws. Maintaining flood irrigation at district sites and updating/maintaining drip and sprinkler systems, and desert landscaped areas are also part of the job. The Grounds Keeper must read all label and job-related information, understand and apply safety-related precautions as outlined in SDS, and contribute to the team by accomplishing additional duties as assigned. The position requires the ability to read and interpret documents in English, write routine correspondence in English, and speak effectively in English before groups. The ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations/issues, and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written and verbal form is also necessary.
