About The Position

Performs semi-skilled diagnostic, repair, and maintenance work on grounds and related equipment. Assists in major repair work and advanced electronic diagnostics. Performs inspections on grounds equipment. Operates grounds and related equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent.
  • One year of experience in equipment or automotive repair and maintenance work.
  • Possession of a class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required at time of employment.
  • Possession of a valid commercial, class A Maryland driver's license or an equivalent is required within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engine in diesel, 2-cycle and 4-cycle forms and related systems.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and components.
  • Knowledge of automotive parts, components, and systems.
  • Knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in heavy grounds and related equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Skill in heavy grounds and related equipment diagnostic, repair and maintenance work.
  • Skill in the diagnosis of heavy grounds and related equipment malfunctions.
  • Ability to complete assignments by established deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Persons appointed to this class are designated as Essential personnel and as such are required to work when schools are/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency.
  • They are subject to be called to duty and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advance notice.
  • They may be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays to get schools/offices open for the next business day
  • Requires independent travel to worksites throughout Baltimore County, including inclement weather days or other emergency situations when schools and/or offices are closed, weekends and holidays.
  • Persons appointed to this class must be physically qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and must remain physically qualified to operate such vehicles throughout their employment.
  • Persons holding a commercial driver’s license (CDL) are subject to alcohol and drug testing in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations and Board of Education policy.
  • Citizenship, residency, or work VISA in United States required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with internal combustion engine in diesel, 2-cycle and 4-cycle forms and hydraulic systems and components preferred.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively in the class may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Performs semi-skilled diagnostic repair and maintenance work on grounds and construction equipment including, but not limited to, trucks, trailers, riding tractors, tractors with loaders and backhoes, power rollers, paint machines, troweling machines, sod cutters and power generators.
  • Assists in disassembling and reassembling water cooled gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and hydraulic systems.
  • Uses special instruments to check cylinders and crankshaft journal wear.
  • Assists with overhauling, reconditioning, and repairing self-contained, PTO driven and pull-type equipment.
  • Assists in overhauling, reconditioning, and repairing components such as power steering pumps, cylinders and control, hydraulics pumps, etc.
  • Assists with the installations of hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems and brake systems for snowplows on trucks and tractors.
  • Performs road service calls as required in all weather conditions.
  • Assists in maintaining daily logs and reports for maintenance accountability.
  • Enters data into the Grounds comprehensive maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Participates in the Office of Grounds snow removal program and other emergency events.
  • May assist with repairs to vehicles when working with Baltimore County Highways with snow removal on public and residential streets.
  • Welds and fabricate frames, mower decks, chassis, etc. on various types of equipment.
  • Performs other duties of a similar scope and complexity.
