About The Position

The Grounds/Custodial Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium’s Grounds and Custodial Department, including management of all grounds staff. This position oversees and manages daily tasks related to the upkeep of Zoo & Aquarium grounds and removal of trash/recycling, with the goal of maintaining a clean and safe environment for guests and employees. This position is also responsible for the execution of onsite event setups and tear downs, as well as maintaining cleanliness of the grounds during events.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 3-5 years prior management/supervisory experience required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to make immediate decisions pertaining to safety.
  • Can move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Comfortable with possible exposure to bodily fluids, including blood, vomit, urine, etc.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.
  • Must pass a background and drug screening.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree welcomed.
  • At least 2 years’ janitorial/custodial experience or related strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with grounds/custodial equipment, such as power washers, trash compactors, etc., preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and manages daily grounds/custodial related tasks, including delegating and prioritizing daily work assignments of staff.
  • Oversees and ensures cleanliness is maintained in all facilities, including restrooms, administrative areas, buildings, event spaces, etc.
  • Performs inspections to ensure cleanliness, completion, and quality control of tasks, buildings, and event spaces.
  • Performs litter control in all areas of the Zoo & Aquarium, including parking lots, walking paths, grassy areas, buildings, event spaces, etc.
  • Ensures regular and frequent emptying of trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Organizes and cleans all outside eating and sitting areas.
  • Ensures the safe operation of grounds/custodial related equipment, such as trash compactors, floor scrubbers, pressure washers, orbital buffers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and extractors.
  • Assists with any guest needs, including questions, inquiries, and directions.
  • Establishes relationships with outside vendors to ensure effective and cooperative operations.
  • Advises staff and ensures quality control and safe completion of tasks.
  • Addresses and resolves any facility-related concerns or complaints from employees, visitors, or clients in a timely and professional manner.
  • Collaborates with Conservation team to ensure recycling and composting standards are obtained.
  • Leads all hiring, scheduling, training, and coaching processes, in coordination with Grounds/Custodial Assistant Manager and supervisory staff.
  • Addresses staff/personnel issues and conflicts, while providing support for resolution and problem solving.
  • Conducts regular audits of staff performance, providing feedback and training as needed.
  • Assists with the development and monitoring of department budget.
  • Educates and implements Zoo & Aquarium policy and strategic initiatives amongst department staff.
  • Orders and tracks necessary supplies and maintains grounds/custodial supply inventory.
  • Tracks invoices related to department supplies, maintenance, professional services, outside services, etc.
  • Delegates and prioritizes event set up and tear down tasks, ensuring timely execution.
  • Identifies and resolves potential guest-impact issues related to event set ups.
  • Works with event managers to determine event set up needs.
  • Coordinates with outside vendors as needed.
  • Collaborates with Conservation team to ensure recycling and composting standards are obtained during events.
