About The Position

Vertical Mechanical Group (VMG) is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Technician to support commercial construction and field operations. This role is responsible for performing concrete scanning, utility locating, and subsurface investigations using GPR and related technologies to support safe and accurate project execution across active job sites.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required
  • Experience Operating: Cart-based and handheld GPR systems
  • Knowledge of: Concrete scanning, Utility locating, Subsurface mapping
  • Ability to: Accurately interpret and mark findings
  • Familiarity with: EM locators, Ferroscan / cover meter equipment, Tablets, laptops, and field software systems
  • Ability to work outdoors in varied weather conditions
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, and lift 30–50 lbs regularly
  • Comfortable working on Commercial construction sites, Roadways, Industrial facilities, Confined spaces (with proper training)
  • Ability to travel locally and regionally as required
  • Strong safety awareness and adherence to: OSHA standards, Site-specific safety plans, Proper use of PPE
  • Ability to identify jobsite hazards
  • Drug screening and background checks commonly required
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Clear verbal communication with clients and crews
  • Accurate documentation and report writing
  • Time management and ability to work independently
  • Professional conduct on active job sites
  • Entry-Level Technician: 0–2 years of related field experience
  • Mid-Level / Senior Technician: 3–5+ years of GPR and utility locating experience
  • Ability to work independently and manage projects accurately from start to finish
  • Proven accuracy and independent project handling

Nice To Haves

  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
  • NULCA Utility Locating Certification
  • ASNT NDT Level I or II certification (preferred for advanced technicians)
  • Manufacturer training on GPR equipment such as GSSI, MALÅ, or IDS

Responsibilities

  • Perform concrete scanning and utility locating using GPR equipment
  • Detect and identify rebar, post-tension cables, conduits, voids, and underground utilities
  • Accurately mark findings and communicate results to field personnel and clients
  • Interpret GPR data and create clear field documentation and reports
  • Operate complementary locating equipment such as EM locators, ferro scans, and cover meters
  • Maintain and calibrate scanning equipment and field tools
  • Follow all OSHA regulations and site-specific safety requirements
  • Coordinate with project teams, contractors, and field crews on active construction sites
  • Travel to local and regional job sites as needed
  • Maintain professional conduct and communication on customer sites
