About The Position

Requirements

  • Completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, the CAHEA, or other organization approved by HHS, OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual performs high complexity testing.
  • Training and post-training assessment for all role-applicable SOPs and Laboratory Compliance workflows must be completed after hire but before any laboratory work can be completed.
  • Competency assessment will occur one month before independent work is permitted.
  • Familiarity with most major techniques for staining and special staining.
  • Analytical skills necessary for processing slides under tight deadlines and general supervision.
  • Ability to identify specific specimens for supervisory follow-up.
  • Complete 12 hours of continuing education per year.
  • Competency assessments performed upon hire and throughout the year.
  • New Hire and Annual Training, including all required training sessions for all new and updated SOPs and updates to software systems as applicable.
  • Associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution OR have education and training equivalent to such degree that includes at least 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, with at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or 24 semester hours of science courses including 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology and 12 semester hours of biology and chemistry in any combination.

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of prior work experience in grossing techniques.
  • Experience in a large-scale organization or high-volume production environment.
  • May require lifting up to 25 pounds without the aid of a device or a second person.
  • Employee may be expected to travel up to 25% or less of their time from their home office.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tissue description, dissection, and sectioning for optimal diagnostic evaluation of small uncomplicated skin specimens.
  • Review specimens for completeness and accuracy, including site and patient identification.
  • Select appropriate processing times and special procedures for tissues.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems involving methodology, technique, and instrumentation utilization in the gross area/room.
  • Perform maintenance and quality control on instruments.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Monitor supply and inventory.
  • Perform other histology-related work as needed (embedding, microtomy, block/slide filing) once properly trained.
  • Actively support and assist in the implementation and monitoring of quality control and quality assurance policies.
