About The Position

Salina Veterinary Hospital, located in Salina, KS, is a premier full-service veterinary facility with over 50 years of experience in animal care, specializing in small animals like dogs and cats. The Groomer reports to the Practice Manager and is responsible for maintaining the coat condition of patients through bathing, brushing, nail trimming, and teeth brushing. This role involves client interaction to understand their expectations and the patient's specific needs. The Groomer also ensures the grooming area is kept clean, sanitized, safe, and secure. This position is paid on a commission basis.

Requirements

  • Experience grooming/caring for animals
  • Ability to lift patients up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients over 25 pounds with assistance
  • Practices OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE

Responsibilities

  • Admit patients, noting client instructions, contact information, and pick-up times.
  • Determine necessary veterinary services during the client's visit.
  • Assess patient care needs based on individual requirements and circumstances.
  • Observe patient appearance and activity for general physical condition, signs of illness, disease, or discontent.
  • Part patient's hair to check for ticks, fleas, red/sore/inflamed areas, and lumps.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury, or unusual activity to veterinary technicians or veterinarians.
  • Handle patients appropriately and restrain difficult patients when necessary.
  • Perform bathing services, including shampooing and drying.
  • Perform grooming services, including brushing, clipping, hand scissoring, trimming, and shaping the patient's coat.
  • Stay current on new grooming techniques and trends.
  • Administer medication (when instructed), perform general cleansing, parasite control baths, pedicures, medicated dips (when instructed), and ear cleansing as required.
  • Apply technical knowledge of products and medications, including dietary products.
  • Explain and educate clients on products and answer questions regarding product purchase/use.
  • Perform work according to established methods or special instructions.
  • Maintain grooming room and yard; clean and disinfect cages, tubs, grooming tables, and yard daily.
  • Vacuum and mop floors; empty trash; clean clipper blades, scissors, and brushes after use; perform monthly dryer and clipper maintenance.
  • Deliver groomed patients to clients and ensure satisfaction, addressing any concerns.
  • Train, supervise, and assist the Grooming Assistant.
  • Set performance standards and monitor performance.
  • Conduct timely performance evaluations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
