About The Position

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for a full-time Grill Cook position in the Dining Services Department. This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Manager and Shift Supervisor. The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Grill Cook. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude. The purpose of this role is to assist in daily food production and service, following established production guidelines in food preparation and assisting the Supervisor as needed.

Requirements

  • 2+ years in a food service or hospitality role, with experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
  • A high school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Organizational and time-management skills; ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • ServSafe or equivalent food handling certification preferred.
  • Strong communication skills with a customer service focus, capable of working well with diverse groups.
  • Ability to perform duties in a fast-paced, physical environment, including standing, lifting, and walking for extended periods.
  • Demonstrate fundamental English-language verbal and written skills for understanding, interpreting, and completing assignments.
  • Ability to read recipes, rules/regulations, and effectively utilize the manuals listed above.
  • Exhibit effective verbal communication skills to provide courteous and responsive service to students, employees, and guests.
  • Possess basic mathematical skills for determining quantities and accurate record-keeping.
  • Ability to provide clear verbal and written directions to employees professionally.
  • Ability to stand or walk continuously, with very little sitting, and to consistently perform essential job functions.
  • Flexibility to include nights and weekends.
  • Overtime may be necessary due to time pressures.
  • Tasks involve climbing stairs, bending, stooping, kneeling, and safely lifting approximately 40 pounds using proper lifting techniques.
  • Frequent exposure to various cleaning chemicals, smoke, spices, and odors will occur.
  • This position is designated as Essential Personnel as outlined in the Staff Handbook of Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Candidates must successfully pass a background check that is satisfactory to the University.

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Prepare grilled food items.
  • Follows recipes in preparing menu items per ticket order.
  • Maintains a clean, sanitary workplace.
  • Assists in stocking the sandwich table.
  • Stocks drink boxes.
  • When called on, operate the register according to the cashiers manual.
  • Maintain customer relations with a positive and professional attitude.
  • Maintain the dining room and service area in a sanitary manner.
  • Keep all condiment areas stocked and cleaned.
  • Performs any other related duties that may be required.
  • Performs alternate work assignments in other campus departments during the summer months.
