Grid Modernization Specialist, Solution Architect

The Mosaic CompanyRenton, WA
$125,000 - $205,000

About The Position

The Grid Modernization Solution Architect is a senior consulting role responsible for the end-to-end solution design, integration architecture, and technical leadership of grid operations technology programs across North America. This role owns the holistic solution vision spanning ADMS, OMS, SCADA, EMS, DERMS, GIS, and related enterprise systems, ensuring that individual platform implementations are cohesive, properly integrated, and aligned with each client’s operational objectives and long-term grid modernization strategy. Unlike platform-specific leads who focus on the configuration and deployment of individual systems, the Solution Architect operates across the full technology stack. This role bridges the gap between client business requirements and technical execution, translating utility operational needs into integrated solution designs that account for: Real-time grid monitoring, control, and optimization across transmission and distribution Cross-platform data flows and integration architecture (SCADA to ADMS, GIS to network model, AMI to OMS, DERMS to DMS) IT/OT convergence, cybersecurity zoning, and NERC CIP compliance considerations Vendor solution evaluation, platform selection support, and technology roadmap development Migration strategies from legacy systems to modern, integrated grid operations platforms The position requires deep domain expertise across utility grid operations, control room workflows, and enterprise technology integration, combined with the consulting acumen to lead complex, multi-stakeholder engagements.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in utility grid operations technology, including direct involvement in ADMS, OMS, SCADA, EMS, DMS, or DERMS implementation programs.
  • Demonstrated experience designing integrated solution architectures across multiple grid operations platforms in a consulting or vendor delivery context.
  • Strong expertise in computer hardware, OS administration, virtualization, networking, security, IT operations and automation, and data/database management.
  • Direct experience with at least one leading OT/grid operations platforms (e.g., Schneider Electric ADMS/EMS, GE Vernova GridOS, Oracle NMS, OSI Monarch/eTerra, ABB, Siemens, CGI).
  • Familiarity with IT/OT network architecture, cybersecurity zoning, and NERC CIP compliance as it relates to grid operations systems.
  • Experience leading solution architecture for large-scale ($10M+) grid modernization programs.
  • Prior experience supporting vendor evaluation, platform selection, and technology roadmap development for utility clients.
  • Experience with cloud and hybrid deployment architectures for grid operations systems (Azure, AWS, or private cloud).
  • Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science discipline, or equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Collaborate with Grid Modernization practice leadership, program managers, platform-specific leads (OMS, SCADA/EMS, GIS, DERMS), network model engineers, integration specialists, and other Mosaic consultants
  • Work directly with utility executive sponsors, engineering leadership, control room operations, IT/OT architecture teams, distribution planning, and field operations, as well as OMS/ADMS/SCADA/EMS software vendors, system integrators, and implementation partners

Responsibilities

  • Define and own the integrated solution architecture for grid modernization programs, spanning ADMS, OMS, DMS, SCADA, EMS, DERMS, GIS, AMI, and supporting enterprise systems.
  • Develop solution blueprints, reference architectures, and integration design documents that serve as the technical foundation for program delivery.
  • Lead architecture design workshops with utility stakeholders, facilitating consensus across business operations, IT, OT, and vendor teams.
  • Ensure end-to-end traceability from business requirements through solution design, integration specifications, and test scenarios.
  • Evaluate vendor platform capabilities and constraints, providing objective technical assessments to guide client platform selection and procurement decisions.
  • Understand how integration interfaces fit within and support the overall Solution Architecture, including system interactions, data flows, and end‑to‑end operational processes.
  • Collaborate with client IT/OT staff to ensure integration considerations are aligned with architectural principles, design decisions, and solution‑level outcomes.
  • Define non-functional requirements including system performance, availability, scalability, disaster recovery, and cybersecurity architecture.
  • Serve as the primary technical authority on grid modernization engagements, providing guidance to project teams, platform-specific leads, and client stakeholders.
  • Act as trusted technical advisor to utility executives, engineering leadership, and control room management on grid operations technology strategy.
  • Oversee technical quality across concurrent workstreams, ensuring consistency of approach and adherence to architecture standards.
  • Provide technical oversight during key program milestones including Factory Acceptance Testing, Site Acceptance Testing, integration testing, cutover planning, and go-live.
  • Support development of project technical deliverables including design documents, configuration specifications, test strategies, and operational readiness assessments.
  • Mentor and develop junior consultants, solution leads, and integration specialists within the Grid Modernization practice.
  • Support business development efforts by contributing to proposals, RFP/RFI responses, statements of work, and client presentations.
  • Conduct technology assessments and develop grid modernization roadmaps for prospective and existing clients.
  • Represent the Grid Modernization practice in industry forums, client workshops, and vendor partner engagements.
  • Contribute to practice intellectual property including reference architectures, reusable solution templates, white papers, and lessons-learned repositories.
  • Support the development of new service offerings and capability expansions aligned with evolving market demand.
  • Maintain current knowledge of: ADMS, OMS, DMS, SCADA, EMS, and DERMS platform capabilities, release roadmaps, and vendor competitive landscape; Grid modernization trends including DER integration, microgrids, grid-edge intelligence, and distribution system operator (DSO) models; IT/OT convergence, OT cybersecurity frameworks (NERC CIP, IEC 62351, NIST CSF), and utility cloud adoption patterns; Utility regulatory drivers, rate case technology justifications, and reliability performance standards (IEEE 1366).
  • Provide thought leadership within the Grid Modernization practice and contribute to internal knowledge sharing, training, and capability development.
