About The Position

The Transmission Line Asset Strategy (TLAS) team is responsible for maximizing the lifecycle performance of PG&E’s transmission line assets to enable the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of energy while ensuring environmental stewardship and regulatory compliance. The team develops and maintains asset strategies, risk frameworks, and investment plans that optimize transmission line performance throughout the asset lifecycle and modernize the grid. By integrating asset condition, performance, consequence, reliability, and risk information, the organization identifies and prioritizes mitigation strategies that reduce risk, improve system resiliency, and modernizes the grid. These strategies may include maintenance programs, inspection programs, asset replacement initiatives, and capital investment projects. The team operates in a vertical and collaborative environment to identify emerging asset risks, evaluate mitigation alternatives, and develop investment strategies that balance safety, reliability, affordability, and compliance objectives. The organization also supports regulatory commitments and enterprise initiatives by providing technical leadership for risk-informed asset management, wildfire risk reduction programs, investment planning activities, and long-range infrastructure strategies. California anticipates accelerating growth in electrification, and PG&E needs to modernize its grid planning to meet these customer needs. The Transmission Line Asset Strategy (TLAS) team is looking for a Principal Grid Innovation Engineer to serve as a senior technical and strategic leader responsible for maximizing the lifecycle performance and modernizing of PG&E's transmission line assets. The position develops and maintains asset investment strategies that enable the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of energy while ensuring regulatory compliance and risk reduction. The job responsibilities include integrating engineering, asset health, risk assessment, operations, maintenance, and investment planning perspectives to develop data-driven strategies that optimize asset performance across its lifecycle. This role influences enterprise investment decisions by evaluating asset risks, identifying mitigation strategies, and recommending maintenance, programmatic, and capital interventions that achieve reliability, safety, and affordability objectives. The candidate will work closely with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance & Construction, Transmission Planning, Wildfire Mitigation, Finance, and Regulatory organizations to ensure alignment between asset condition, risk exposure, funding requirements, and business objectives. This position is based out of PG&E’s General Office complex in downtown Oakland, CA although flexible work location will be considered. In person participation on a regular basis is a key component of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electrical engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with grid modeling software (e.g. CYMDIST, PSLF, Aspen, etc.)
  • 10 years of electric utility related experience

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical Engineering Degree with Power Systems emphasis
  • Civil Engineering Degree, Mechanical Engineering Degree, Other types of Engineering Degrees
  • MBA or other Business Strategy experience
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of California
  • Experience in transmission line asset management, asset strategy, asset health, and risk management.
  • Experience applying asset management principles consistent with ISO 55000 frameworks.
  • Experience developing risk-based investment plans and capital portfolios.
  • Experience performing asset lifecycle cost analysis and risk assessment.
  • Experience using asset condition and performance data to inform investment decisions.
  • Knowledge of transmission line design, construction, maintenance, inspection, and operations.
  • Experience supporting regulatory filings and compliance initiatives.
  • Experience communicating technical recommendations to executive leadership.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
