About The Position

This recruitment will be used to fill two undergraduate student part-time (a maximum of 10 hours per week) in Plant Molecular and Genetic Engineering for the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU). The Deluc Lab seeks two committed greenhouse technicians to maintain grapevine plants in the greenhouse. Under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator, the two technicians will be responsible for the daily maintenance of ~150 plants.

Requirements

  • Academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
  • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
  • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
  • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term
  • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
  • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

  • Experience in managing plants in greenhouse setting

Responsibilities

  • watering plants every day via an automated dripping irrigation
  • preparing and providing macro and micronutrient solutions to the plants
  • monitoring and managing fungal diseases using standard pesticides (sulfur, Millstop [Potassium Bicarbonate)
  • controlling flower pollination
  • controlling vegetative and reproductive growth (leaf and crop thinning)
  • disposing waste material by autoclave
  • maintaining a log book every day
  • meeting with the PI every week
