About The Position

The Greenhouse Assistant Intern supports the Growing Hope program by assisting with the cultivation, preservation, and distribution of Choctaw heritage plants and seeds. This role contributes to the revitalization of traditional agriculture and food practices while supporting community engagement with Choctaw heritage crops. The intern will report to the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Experience or interest in plant cultivation, gardening, or agriculture
  • Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, Choctaw heritage plants and traditional farming practices
  • Ability to identify and address common plant pests and nutrition issues

Responsibilities

  • Plant, grow, harvest, and manage Choctaw heritage plants and seed stocks in greenhouse and outdoor garden spaces.
  • Regularly inspect plants for signs of pest infestations and nutritional deficiencies and take appropriate action to address the issues.
  • Ensure sanitary and healthy growing conditions to support optimal plant growth.
  • Collect and record data on plant health, growing patterns, and pest or plant nutrition issues, and report findings to the team.
  • Help with the distribution of seeds from the Growing Hope program to Choctaw growers via mail or pickup.
  • Support community classes, presentations, and educational events, sharing knowledge about traditional agriculture and food practices.
  • Work with interns, providing guidance and support to help them learn about heritage plant cultivation.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
