About The Position

The Graphics Designer II position provides graphic design artwork and prepares technical, scientific and historical printed material. These materials are distributed to division technical and field personnel, other scientists, regulated industries, the media and the general public.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent and five (5) years of experience in editing and publishing materials; or A bachelor’s degree (4 years) from an accredited college or university with a major in communications, graphics, English or art and one (1) year of experience in editing and publishing materials.
  • Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

  • Work history, duties and responsibilities, hours worked, supervisor, and formal education fields, etc. must be filled out to determine qualifications for this position.
  • Responses to Qualifying Questions must be verifiable in the Candidate Profile.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud software including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Knowledge of design and graphic design principles, including typography and layout.
  • Knowledge of color, inks, papers and screening, and working knowledge of printing technology.
  • Ability to evaluate aesthetic and technical quality of photographic images.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with others in a professional manner.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to walk on uneven ground and in inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift and transport 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Creates original artwork for brochures, displays, scientific publications, business forms, logos, posters, animation and other graphics that may be required using Adobe Creative Cloud products.
  • Designs and edits infographics, art and concepts for outreach materials including items used for social media platforms.
  • Creates type styles and sizes for titles, headings and text.
  • Selects colors and papers and determines percentages of screens.
  • Sizes photographs, drawings, charts, maps, etc., and fits them into a text.
  • Designs and prepares layouts, including marks and notations for the printer.
  • Enhances images for print and online use using Adobe Photoshop.
  • Prepares for printing all materials submitted by the administrative, technical and regulatory bureaus including scientific and technical books and professional journals
  • Prepares booklets, pamphlets, brochures, folders, training manuals, technical circulars and survey update for print and digital production
  • Produce business forms and letterheads, logos, posters and any other graphics and camera-ready copy that may be required.
  • Designs and builds educational, outreach displays, and exhibits.
  • Designs for displays incorporating three-dimensional models, used to educate industry, scientists and the general public about DPI programs and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Serves as backup photographer for the Public Information and Outreach Section on programs and activities for distribution to internal and external customers.
  • Catalogues and files digital files of images, negatives, film, tapes, prints and slides for proper identification, easy access and use.
  • Sets up projection equipment and audio systems in the division auditorium and for division functions.
  • Assists the Public Information Director with various special projects and assignments, including emergency programs, as required.
