About The Position

Sonoma County Library is seeking a talented Graphic Arts Designer to create visuals that engage the community and tell the library's story. This role involves designing for major campaigns, community events, digital content, and print materials. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful designer with fresh ideas, strong production skills, an eye for detail, and a passion for creating engaging, accessible, and meaningful work. The Graphic Arts Designer will work under the general direction of the Communications Director, developing and producing visual materials to support Library programs, services, and communications. This position involves collaborating with internal customers to develop creative concepts, managing projects through production, and utilizing current design technologies. The role also includes providing functional direction and training to Graphics staff, coordinating with vendors, and contributing to the development of the library’s graphics services. This is an advanced-journey level position responsible for directing and reviewing the work of other Graphics staff.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college with major coursework in fine arts, graphic design, web design, communications, marketing, or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of graphic design experience, web design, and/or the development of public education programs and materials.
  • Knowledge of graphic design concepts, processes, and procedures, including illustration of various media, form design, reproduction, and layout.
  • Knowledge of typography, pre-press production and color correction, and printing processes and technology.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, codes, and guidelines related to assigned projects and programs.
  • Knowledge of current graphics software.
  • Knowledge of English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by dealing with vendors, contractors, and library staff.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques to provide training and direction to adults in the graphics field.
  • Knowledge of principles of leading and developing skills in others.
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques for working with others to ensure teamwork is conducted smoothly.
  • Knowledge of in-house and outside print production.
  • Ability to use innovation to creatively design effective marketing and informational materials relative to library programs, projects, services, and activities.
  • Ability to visualize abstract ideas and concepts and graphically translate ideas into effective and impactful designs.
  • Ability to produce neat and accurate marketing collateral and publications requiring meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to complete projects within time deadlines and budgets as assigned.
  • Ability to respond to and effectively prioritize requests for service.
  • Ability to identify and implement effective course of action to complete assigned work.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, design, and prepare a variety of visual and printed community marketing campaigns, materials, publications, and signage that promote library programs and services.
  • Direct, schedule, train, develop, and review the work of other Graphics staff.
  • Work with library staff to review, design, produce, and evaluate a variety of visual promotional and communication materials.
  • Create original artwork and illustrations for a variety of materials.
  • Produce publications and collateral, including library vinyl banners, posters, brochures, flyers, bookmarks, forms, newsletters, special exhibits, and other marketing collateral.
  • Prepare specifications for collateral printing and coordinate design work with internal library staff, ensuring deliverables are on time and within budget.
  • Provide feedback on project creation and completion to the Community Relations Director for performance plans and evaluations.
  • Stay abreast of and utilize graphics software programs, computer hardware, and specialized technical equipment.
  • Develop and deliver work-related training and development programs to other Graphics staff.
  • Maintain graphic arts supplies inventory and associated budget, and monitor the maintenance of specialized technical equipment.
  • Archive and retrieve a variety of original artwork, forms, designs, and supplies.
  • Share and apply emerging technologies with other Graphics staff.
  • Perform duties in an efficient, organized, and timely manner.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
