About The Position

The High School Graduation Coach will provide assistance to all high school students, individually and in groups, regarding high school graduation and completion. This includes analyzing data to identify students or subgroups with potential high school graduation problems, planning, implementing, and tracking individual high school graduation plans, identifying and resolving barriers to graduation, and facilitating career choices and planning. The coach will also teach students appropriate workplace social skills, emphasize the importance of workplace ethics, and assist students in developing the skills and attitudes necessary to obtain paid employment. They will work with vocational and academic teachers to integrate vocational and academic skills into the curricula and communicate with business leaders to increase awareness of student employment potential.

Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including a computer, telephone, audio-visual equipment, vehicle, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to five (5) pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of five (5) to ten (10) pounds.
  • Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Requires the ability of the public to convey or exchange information. Includes guiding/teaching co-workers and receiving assignments and/or direction from the supervisor.
  • Requires the ability to read a variety of curriculum standards, policies and procedures, technical and professional studies, reference books and publications, catalogs, handbooks, etc.
  • Requires the ability to prepare curriculum plans, narrative and statistical reports, correspondence, etc. with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, schedule or diagrammatic form; to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Requires the ability to apply influence systems in assisting classroom teachers; to learn and understand relatively complex principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
  • Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.
  • Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow and give verbal and written instructions; and to counsel and teach co-workers.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently with persons of varying educational backgrounds and in a variety of technical and/or professional languages.
  • Requires the ability to add and subtract totals, to multiply and divide, to utilize mathematical formulas, to determine percentages and decimals and to determine time.
  • Must be able to use practical applications of algebra and statistics.
  • Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape, and visually read various information.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes using office machinery; to operate motor vehicles.
  • Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, keyboards, office equipment, control knobs, buttons, switches, catches, medical equipment, etc.
  • Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
  • Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing: perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Qualified candidates must possess or be eligible for South Carolina teaching certification.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches students appropriate workplace social skills and emphasizes the importance of workplace ethics.
  • Assists students in developing the skills and attitudes necessary to obtain paid employment.
  • Works with vocational and academic teachers to help integrate vocational and academic skills in the curricula.
  • Communicates with business leaders to increase awareness of the employment potential of students.
  • Coordinates and manages special programs or projects as assigned.
  • Prepares and monitors program budget and grants; purchases supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Uses a computer to record and retrieve department information and to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Keeps abreast of developments and innovations in the profession.
  • Schedules and conducts career assessments for students.
  • Monitors and evaluates student training and progress regarding work performance.
  • Participates on committees, task forces, boards, student meetings, etc., as appropriate.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports, including various student and program records, student progress reports, grant applications, memos, correspondence, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment which may include a computer, telephone, audio-visual equipment, calculator, fax machine, copier, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals, such as the immediate supervisor, other District/school administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, other District personnel, students, parents, sales representatives, etc.
  • Provides employment awareness opportunities for students, including arranging field trips, securing speakers, etc.
  • Coordinates student service projects.
  • Performs general administrative and clerical tasks as necessary, including but not limited to, typing, emailing, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, preparing mail, etc.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Monitors the activities/behavior of the student body to ensure student safety and well-being.
