About The Position

The School of Nursing & Dental Hygiene (SONDH) is seeking a temporary, 50% effort, 11-month Graduate Assistant for PhD in Nursing Candidates. This position is ideal for students interested in advancing research related to health equity, vaccine science, cancer prevention, and women’s and child health. The role involves assisting the Principal Investigator (PI), the Matsuda Chair in Women’s Health, with various research activities, including participant recruitment and management, data collection and management, dissemination of findings, and preparation of IRB applications and grant proposals. The candidate will work with multi-disciplinary teams across the nation using virtual technology and in-person settings, and will be expected to mentor undergraduate or master’s students.

Requirements

  • Classified degree-seeking graduate student in a PhD in Nursing program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
  • In good academic standing and maintains a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Must maintain 6 credits per semester except those who have reached 800 (dissertation).
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, communication, and adaptability skills.
  • Familiarity with modern communication tools and technology and ability to assist others in using them.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom and ability to manage multiple projects are essential.

  • Interest in survey methods, qualitative methods, implementation science.
  • Interest in cancer prevention and women’s health.
  • Interest in advancing understanding of best practices to communicate about and develop health systems to support vaccine preventable diseases.
  • Interest in lifelong learning, community engagement, education, aging, nonprofit administration, communications, or related fields.
  • Familiarity with AI tools.
  • Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva, or similar programs.
  • Familiarity with ethical guidelines for research with human subjects.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Matsuda Chair to support ongoing research and day-to-day program operations.
  • Assist with the collection of qualitative and quantitative data, such as conducting interviews, focus groups, or administering and/or collecting surveys.
  • Obtain consent/assent as required by ethics/IRB guidelines and maintain confidentiality of data.
  • Assist in training other study staff.
  • Coordinate and perform analysis of field data with guidance from the supervisor.
  • Participate in debrief sessions with team members following testing sessions to discuss research findings.
  • Write up summaries of research findings and contribute to publications and presentations.
  • Conduct outreach to recruit research participants.
  • Communicate regularly with research team members and other outside stakeholders to plan and execute study aims.
  • Maintain communications with internal/external project partners and assist with any necessary paperwork.
  • Assist in carrying out routine awareness-raising events to ensure ongoing project funding.
  • Review and summarize relevant research literature to guide project activities.
  • Actively participate in team meetings to share insights and best practices from active projects.
  • Mentor undergraduate or master’s students working on the team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
