The 6A Stepdown Unit at Allegheny General Hospital is a 30-bed unit specializing in the care of ICU stepdown patients and complex medical cases. It primarily serves as a receiving unit for patients stepping down from MICU, but also admits patients from the Emergency Department, outside hospitals, and smaller ICUs requiring a higher level of care for stabilization. The unit frequently cares for patients with respiratory issues (with respiratory therapy available on the floor), drug and alcohol withdrawal, GI bleeds, altered mental status, sepsis, and congestive heart failure (CHF). Nurses manage a high-acuity patient population requiring frequent blood product administration, intravenous access, and close monitoring. Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is a Level I Shock Trauma Center with 5 state-of-the-art ICUs and a state-of-the-art Cancer Center, comprising over 550 beds. Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is a 9-hospital system, part of Highmark Health, committed to transforming healthcare by providing highly effective services. AHN values inclusivity, fresh perspectives, and offers growth and educational opportunities.
