(Year-Round) Graduate Intern - Marine Hydrokinetic Data Curation

National Laboratory of the Rockies•Golden, CO
•$44,500 - $71,200•Onsite

About The Position

The NLR Data Engineering Group is seeking a Graduate Intern to curate the Marine & Hydrokinetic Data Repository (MHKDR) and support other domain-specific data repositories. These repositories provide public access to outcomes of Department of Energy-funded research in geothermal, marine and hydrokinetic technologies, and other areas including water purification, the energy-water nexus, renewable energy systems, and alternative energy systems. The intern will curate individual submissions and advise researchers and scientists on organizing project data for submission. Submissions may involve computational fluid dynamics, mechanical engineering, wave and current monitoring, structural testing, and marine and hydrokinetic energy converters. Curation involves reviewing submission metadata for accuracy, completeness, and relevance to the submitted files; organizing disparate submissions; standardizing metadata fields; adopting and implementing emerging data standards and requirements; and adding supplemental information that may help the DOE categorize submissions. Curators contact submitters when needed to resolve discrepancies or omissions. The intern should be comfortable working independently, critically evaluating datasets, and proposing practical data organization and metadata solutions. The role may also support other energy research projects through data organization, analysis support, or documentation of datasets used in ongoing research. The expected average contribution is 20 hours per week during semesters and 40 hours per week during breaks, including summer. The position is an internship with a fixed term. NLR is located in Golden, Colorado, and is the nation's primary laboratory for energy systems research and development. The Data Engineering Group is a multidisciplinary team of data and software engineers, data scientists, and product developers developing data solutions for strategic energy analysis. The team focuses on making energy data and software more accessible, usable, and actionable for researchers and engineers.
