About The Position

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management graduate intern will support the Emergency Management Team. This position will help streamline the development and maintenance of internal situational awareness platforms, enhancing overall responsiveness and decision-making capabilities.

Requirements

  • Must currently be enrolled as a graduate student in an emergency management, homeland security, public health, public safety, or public administration degree program.
  • Knowledge and fluency in Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management, Incident Command System (ICS), and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with care and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ideal candidates are detail-oriented and can adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Must be a self-motivated student in good academic standing.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment during stressful and chaotic situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Incident Command System (ICS) – ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700, ICS 800 (Training can be completed through the National Disaster and Emergency Management University).

Responsibilities

  • Assist staff with documentation and evidence collection for Emergency Management Accreditation Program (EMAP) tasks and other departmental accreditation initiatives.
  • Perform comprehensive research on emergency management best practices and key legislation to develop and maintain an organized repository of information for the department.
  • Support community outreach and education initiatives to promote public safety and preparedness throughout the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.
  • Assist with diverse administrative tasks as needed, including drafting materials and providing logistical support for departmental events and stakeholder meetings.
