About The Position

This position is for a Graduate Assistant at the Hawaii Family Engagement Center (HFEC) within the College of Education, Center on Disability Studies (CDS). The role involves assisting with project implementation, coordinating training programs, managing social media and website presence, developing newsletters, and supporting event planning. The assistant will also help with developing online training content, data collection and analysis, research, and documenting project activities. This is a temporary, part-time position (50% FTE) expected to begin mid-June 2026 and continue until September 30, 2026, contingent on funding and performance.

Requirements

  • Classified graduate status in good academic standing (minimum 3.0 GPA) in a degree-seeking graduate program at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to edit written products such as articles, newsletters, web posts, training manuals, tool kits, and lesson plans.
  • Experience in writing research reports using qualitative/quantitative data.
  • Proficiency in the following applications: Zoom, Google Workspace, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Facebook, Instagram.
  • Organizational skills that include attention to detail and ability to self-initiate/motivate.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision in an occasionally fast-paced office or field environment as part of a team.
  • Availability during normal business hours (Monday – Friday, 9:00am-5:00pm).
  • Ability to lift and carry at least twenty (20) pounds independently, broken down in smaller loads or utilizing standard equipment (e.g. carts, dollies).
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays as needed.
  • Ability to travel independently to various locations throughout the state of Hawai'i in a timely manner. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai'i Driver's License (Class 3), or other means of transportation which meets position needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree and/or academic background in education, social work, sociology, or psychology.
  • Experience in teaching, training, or leading workshops and web seminars; or providing support to schools, educators, parents, and community organizations on family engagement in education policies and practices.
  • Training or credential in Family Engagement.
  • Experience with course management systems and e-learning environments.
  • Experience using Canva, Visme, MailChimp, SurveyMonkey, Eventbrite, and/or video editing applications.

Responsibilities

  • Assist project implementation under the direction of the Hawaii Family Engagement Center (HFEC) Principal Investigator and project staff.
  • Assist in coordinating, developing, and providing statewide training programs that build the capacity of the state education agency, school-level staff and personnel, families, and community-based organizations to engage in effective partnerships that support student achievement and school improvement.
  • Assist with developing content, coordinating, and maintaining project social media accounts and website presence.
  • Develops, writes, and distributes the project’s quarterly newsletter, including gathering content, coordinating with team members and stakeholders, editing for clarity and accuracy, and ensuring timely dissemination to relevant audiences.
  • Support planning and event coordination of in-person and/or virtual conferences, stakeholder meetings, and training (including light lifting).
  • Support the development and facilitation of online family engagement in education training content for educators and families.
  • Assist with the collection, analysis, and evaluation of project data.
  • Research and summarize information from documents and academic literature on family engagement for conducting research, generating training and technical assistance products, and grant writing.
  • Document project activities for the purposes of tracking project progress and federal project reporting.
  • Manage project contacts to aid project information dissemination.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.
