About The Position

The Graduate Assistant collaborates with the Director of Outdoor Programs to support the management of student leaders and oversee the operations of Outdoor Programs and recreation. Reporting to the Director of Recreation and Outdoor Programs, the primary function of this position is to provide assistance on OP projects, student leadership and programming curriculum development, training of student leaders, and facilitating program growth. This position is a member of the department’s leadership team. This position requires flexible working hours, which will include working some evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Education or
Two years of experience planning and facilitating outdoor programs trips; including budgeting, risk mitigation, and
A valid California Class C CA drivers’ license with a good driving record is
A current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record will be required prior to offer of employment.
Knowledge of outdoor recreation programming, technical outdoor skills, outdoor equipment management, and group
Experience teaching outdoor skills and leading participants in outdoor
Understanding of risk management principles and best practices for outdoor recreation
Working knowledge of relevant federal, state, and university policies and
General understanding of program planning, implementation, and
Understanding of leadership development, student learning, and group
Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
Ability to mentor, advise, and support college-aged
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced
Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, particularly in dynamic outdoor
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and other relevant
Adaptability, initiative, and willingness to learn new systems and
Ability to effectively engage with individuals from diverse cultural, ethnic, and social backgrounds
Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and

Responsibilities

Support Outdoor Programs student leaders in the planning, coordination, and execution of outdoor trips and Attend and assist in facilitating all Apprentice and Trip Leader Trainings (approximately four weekends per year).
Assist in overseeing Outdoor Programs rental and bicycle shop operations, including collaborating with student managers to improve systems, processes, and customer
Recruit, train, supervise, and develop student employees and Outdoor Programs student
Collaborate with campus partners and community organizations to expand outdoor recreation opportunities and create meaningful educational experiences for
Develop and support initiatives that increase participation, accessibility, and inclusion within Outdoor Programs.
Mentor and advise student leaders through ongoing training, leadership development, and experiential learning
Assist the Director of Outdoor Programs with program assessment, student learning outcomes, data collection, and continuous program improvement
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging by fostering welcoming and accessible environments for all
Seek opportunities to engage and support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in outdoor
Communicate effectively with students, staff, faculty, and external partners through in-person interactions, email, social media, presentations, and other communication
Support Outdoor Programs and Student Affairs initiatives, including New Student Orientation, involvement fairs, leadership events, and commencement-related
Serve as an Outdoor Programs on-call resource during designated trips and programs, as
Perform other duties and special projects as
