About The Position

The Department of History at California State University, Los Angeles (Cal State LA) is seeking graduate students for a 12-month Graduate Assistant position. This role involves providing non-teaching assistance to faculty members in the instruction of History classes. The assistant will gain practical experience in fields related to their advanced study and support faculty with research, course material preparation, and student evaluation. Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of History
  • Currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program
  • Work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings
  • Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of History, in good academic standing
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment
  • Have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Proof of enrollment in program of graduate study in this department
  • Proof of GET enrollment summary (Class Schedule - PDF)
  • Provide two references, including name, company, and contact number. One reference must include a current supervisor or professor.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States
  • Background check completion
  • Disclosure of any final administrative or judicial decision determining that they have committed sexual harassment within the last seven years (after meeting minimum qualifications and before offer of employment)
  • Sign a release form authorizing the release of information by current and/or former employers concerning any substantiated allegations of misconduct (for finalists)

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional non-teaching assistance to faculty member
  • Provide research assistance and practical experience in fields related to their advanced study
  • Assist with handling/or training other students in the use of equipment or other resources
  • Assist faculty with research and preparation of course materials
  • Participate in evaluation of students work
  • Tutoring students
  • Read and evaluate student papers
  • Maintain/submit student records
  • Hold office hours
  • Proctor examinations
  • Perform other tasks as assigned
