About The Position

The Graduate Assistant in the Dean of Students office supports the implementation of student-centered initiatives that advance student engagement, success, and well-being. This role provides professional experience in student life functional areas, including strategic communications, student support services, program development, and administrative operations. The Graduate Assistant will collaborate across units within the Dean of Students office to enhance the student experience and support institutional priorities.

Requirements

  • Current University of Alabama graduate student and enrolled full-time.
  • Must be able to work 20 hours per week during normal business hours, with some flexibility as needed.
  • Must be able to handle sensitive or confidential information with discretion, maintain strong organizational skills and attention to detail, and effectively balance independent work with collaboration as part of a team.
  • Students holding tuition-bearing assistantships must register for a minimum of 6 credit hours of coursework and maintain a combined total of at least 9 credit hours, inclusive of assistantship responsibilities.
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative graduate GPA of 3.0 after completion of the first 12 graduate credit hours at the University.
  • Students on academic warning or in non-degree seeking status are not eligible to hold a graduate assistantship.
  • Must have valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies.
  • Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications such as Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Embodies a professional demeanor and a customer-service-oriented approach when interacting with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Applicants must meet enrollment requirements to be eligible for on-campus student employment.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in a UA degree program and meet minimum credit hour requirements during the academic year: Graduate Students must be registered for at least 4.5 credit hours during fall/spring semesters; International Students must be registered full-time (Graduate = 9 credit hours) during fall/spring semesters.
  • Enrollment requirements must be maintained for the duration of on-campus employment.
  • Individual hiring departments and programs may also have additional eligibility requirements for employment.
  • Prior to hiring, the final candidate(s) must successfully pass a pre-employment background investigation and information obtained from social media and other internet sources.

Nice To Haves

  • Enrollment in a graduate program in Event/Hospitality Management, Higher Education Administration, Communication & Media Studies, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with social media management, digital marketing, or strategic communications, including familiarity with analytics tools.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, or assessing programs, events, or student engagement initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience providing customer service or front-facing support in a professional or campus setting.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively.
