About The Position

The Government & Public Affairs Specialist II at GM Financial supports and contributes to the execution of the company's public policy and legislative strategies. This role involves providing accurate and timely information on current events and legislative cycles, and promoting GM Financial’s public policy goals. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker capable of brainstorming ideas, collaborating with others, developing strategic concepts, and crafting compelling messages to promote GM Financial’s priorities with lawmakers and governmental entities.

Requirements

  • Advanced understanding of federal, state and local legislative processes, landscape, and issues.
  • Experience with developing media relations and corporate communications materials.
  • Experience with legislative tracking tools and software.
  • Knowledge of general marketing concepts, principles and integrated marketing communication theory and practice.
  • Knowledge of AP style.
  • Strong, proven written and oral communication skill.
  • Highly honed editing ability (both content and copy editing).
  • Excellent and efficient working knowledge of Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to display initiative, work autonomously and offer solutions to problems.
  • Attention to detail and ability to meet multiple deadlines while working in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to make independent decisions, demonstrate leadership ability and build relationships.
  • Must be comfortable working both independently and as a team.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in political science, public policy, public administration, communications, public relations, business administration, economics, law or related discipline required.
  • 2-4 years of experience in government relations, legislative or executive branch agency, corporate communications or nonprofit advocacy experience preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with federal, state and local elected officials is a plus.
  • Crisis communication, media training and executive communications experience is a plus.
  • Any experience with Adobe suite is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and track legislation as it impacts GM Financial at a federal, state, and local level.
  • Conduct background research into public policy topics and how they could have an impact on the company’s operations.
  • Monitor media coverage and proactively identify issues that impact the organization.
  • Support company’s public affairs program through background research and development of briefing materials for select industry groups and key policy stakeholders to help drive thoughtful, enterprise-aligned strategies and initiatives that advance company interests and our brand.
  • Promote engagement and education with relevant federal, state and local lawmakers, their staffs, civic organizations and other key stakeholder groups as assigned.
  • Support creation of public affairs engagement opportunities in Texas and other regions with a significant company employment footprint and/or nuanced compliance/regulatory environment.
  • Create educational, advocacy-based and/or promotional strategies and related content to support our financial educational program and community engagement initiatives.
  • Manage deadlines and priorities for multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Provide communication, grammar and editing expertise to support other departments as needed.
