Google - Knowledge Catalog -Engineer

Capgemini•Chicago, NY

About The Position

Capgemini is seeking a Google Knowledge Catalog Engineer to build, curate, and maintain an enterprise-wide data and context catalog on Google Cloud. The role is responsible for the discoverability, quality, and semantic richness of data and AI assets, ensuring technical metadata, business context, and lineage are accurate, enriched, and usable by human analysts and AI or agentic systems, including RAG pipelines and Gemini-based agents. The engineer will configure and maintain catalog structures in Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog, built on Dataplex, and organize assets across Google Cloud and third-party sources. They will enrich metadata, develop semantic layers and taxonomies, automate catalog updates, and partner with engineering, governance, and business teams on cataloging standards and policies. The role also supports data quality and profiling, catalog health and adoption, downstream AI use cases, documentation, and user training.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in data engineering, data governance, or metadata management.
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform, including BigQuery and Google Cloud Knowledge Catalog / Dataplex or prior Data Catalog experience.
  • Strong SQL skills.
  • Working knowledge of Python for automation or scripting.
  • Familiarity with metadata management concepts, including lineage, data classification, business glossaries, and taxonomy or ontology design.
  • Understanding of data governance and compliance principles, including access controls and sensitive data handling.
  • Experience with APIs and automation tooling for metadata ingestion.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Data Science.
  • Strong attention to detail and a structured, systematic approach to organizing information.
  • Ability to translate technical metadata into business-friendly context.
  • Collaborative approach and comfort working across data engineering, governance, and business teams.

  • Organize data across BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Spanner, Vertex AI, Pub/Sub, and third-party sources.
  • Curate and enrich metadata, including business definitions, ownership, sensitivity classifications, lineage, and usage context.
  • Build and maintain semantic layers, taxonomies, and ontologies for natural-language search and AI grounding use cases.
  • Automate metadata ingestion and tagging pipelines using tools such as Dataplex APIs, Cloud Functions, or Dataform.
  • Partner with data engineering, data governance, and business stakeholders to define and enforce cataloging standards, naming conventions, and data classification policies.
  • Support data quality and profiling initiatives and publish scan results as catalog metadata.
  • Monitor catalog health, resolve metadata gaps or inconsistencies, and drive adoption across data and AI teams.
  • Contribute catalog context to downstream AI and agentic use cases, including Gemini- or MCP-based agents querying curated metadata.
  • Document processes and provide training and enablement to data stewards and business users on catalog usage.
