About The Position

Under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Golf Course Mechanic is responsible for the expert maintenance and repair of all golf course equipment, both large and small. This role involves performing a full range of preventive and repair services, including fabrication, welding, reel mower setup and grinding, diesel engine repair, and maintenance of gasoline and two-stroke equipment, as well as electrical repairs and other mechanical work as assigned. The mechanic will perform tune-ups, electrical repairs, major overhauls, and routine service repairs on trucks, cars, tractors, and specialized golf course equipment. The position also includes performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatus.
Understanding of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines.
Knowledge of hydraulic systems, transmissions, and differentials.
Knowledge of electrical motors and vehicles.
Knowledge of small engine equipment, battery-powered hand-held equipment, and other general repair techniques for a wide variety of golf course specific and general machinery and tools.
Skill in using a wide variety of equipment repair and diagnostic tools.
Skill in various types of mechanical repair.
Ability to apply mathematical concepts to repairs and maintenance, including measurements and basic arithmetic including basic algebra.
Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and perform skilled repair work.
Ability to prepare estimates of time and materials needed.
Ability to oversee the work of others.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and the public.
High school diploma required.
Three (3) years of specialized equipment repair experience repairing and maintaining rotary and reel mowers, transportation equipment, tractors and 3-point attachments, back hoes, skid steers, diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulics, electrical diagnostics and repair, small engines, etc., or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Valid Colorado driver's license and a safe driving record.
Ability to operate City-owned equipment.
Ability to perform year-round field work in all temperature and weather extremes.
Ability to lift heavy loads over 50 lbs.
Ability to perform pulling, pushing, stooping, reaching with both hands, walking, standing for long periods, crawling, working on back, bending, kneeling, climbing, and climbing on ladders.
Ability to see and hear well enough to operate machinery safely and work around moving parts and running machines.
Ability to work in confined work areas such as vaults.
Ability to respond to emergencies during off-duty hours.
Ability to properly operate or use shop and hand tools associated with mechanical repair and maintenance, which may include diagnostic equipment, vehicle lifts, acetylene torch, tire changers, welding equipment, grinder, technical grinding unit, electrical motors, wash pad water recycle system, gas and diesel motors, compression tester, multi-meter, specialized golf course equipment tools.
Ability to use computers to maintain records.
Ability to operate tractors, aerifiers, seeders, sod cutters, and other specialty golf course maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair mechanical defects in automobiles, heavy equipment, specialized mowing equipment, golf carts, utility trucks, aerators, sweepers, small equipment, and other mechanical equipment used in golf course maintenance.
Disassemble engines or motors, perform general overhauling; install and adjust brakes, batteries, tires, wiring, and glass; repair transmissions, differentials, carburetors, distributors, fuel pumps, steering systems, starters, generators, universal joints, hydraulic systems, high-pressure pumps, valves, etc.
Perform occasional emergency repairs in or out of the shop.
Conduct welding and acetylene operations; fabricate and modify equipment.
Perform regular and emergency reel sharpening, overhaul, back lapping, bed knife facing, and grinding; conduct daily HOC checks and adjustments.
Execute all functions involved in the preventive maintenance program.
Regularly inspect equipment condition, estimate costs of parts, repairs, and preventative maintenance, and spot-check equipment performance in the field.
Order repair parts and replacement supplies; perform parts inventory; maintain a complete set of records, files, and work orders for all equipment; manage account funds.
Explore alternative purchasing options for parts and supplies to efficiently manage expenses.
Operate more complex equipment in conjunction with training.
Train employees in the proper operation, safety, and service of equipment.
Regulate the use of equipment, if needed.
Maintain the shop area, ensuring safety and cleanliness.
Perform related work as required and assigned.
Interact with internal and external customers in a courteous and respectful manner in all communications and interactions, such as regarding proper operation of equipment, requests for equipment repairs, safety guidelines, use of tools, and the mechanic's bay.
Work with the Superintendent to balance the needs of the golf course with the condition of the equipment.
