About The Position

Gruntwork is hiring a senior Golang engineer to focus specifically on Open Source projects, primarily OpenTofu but also other open source tools at Gruntwork. This is a contractor position, paid based on an hourly rate. We expect an average of 25-35 hours of work per week up to 35 hours (based on your availability and skill level) however, you have the ability to control when you work (assuming you coordinate this with your colleagues on the OpenTofu development team). Although you would start as a contractor, this role sets up a path to full-time employment with Gruntwork when future positions open up, if that’s of interest to you.

  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on Golang
  • Proven experience with open source projects, ideally in a leadership role
  • Must have strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, and are comfortable engaging with external members of the open source community as well as Gruntwork customers
  • You're interested in working a flexible number of hours that averages ~25-35 hours/week and are available ~48 weeks per year to work those hours
  • You have read our company values, and are aligned with them
  • Has extensive experience with building infrastructure. You have worked for years with cloud technologies, have deep familiarity with building cloud infrastructure and security best practices.
  • Has extensive OpenTofu/Terraform experience. You have directly authored plenty of OpenTofu/Terraform modules, you've operated OpenTofu/Terraform in prod and can speak from your years of experience, and you're excited to use and improve OpenTofu.
  • Has a passion for DevOps best practices. You're passionate about the best way to run modern cloud infrastructure in a secure, convenient, and enjoyable way.
  • Has experience taking ownership of software. You can work with stakeholders to define features, plan work, and ship according to plan.
  • Is productive. You can continuously improve a massive project depended on by thousands of engineers safely.
  • Is good at asynchronous collaboration. You are comfortable working with a team of remote engineers, and are able to break down problems and solutions so that they can be addressed in highly visible, manageable chunks of work.
  • Is good at testing well. You know how to balance speed and coverage in the tests you write, and you design software with testability in mind.
  • Is good at using AI well. You understand the complexities of how and when AI-assisted tooling should be used in the development process. You are comfortable using AI (e.g. using Claude, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) to investigate, generate and troubleshoot code.
