About The Position

Gruntwork is hiring a senior Golang engineer to focus specifically on Open Source projects, primarily OpenTofu but also other open source tools at Gruntwork. This is a contractor position, paid based on an hourly rate. We expect an average of 25-35 hours of work per week up to 35 hours (based on your availability and skill level) however, you have the ability to control when you work (assuming you coordinate this with your colleagues on the OpenTofu development team). Although you would start as a contractor, this role sets up a path to full-time employment with Gruntwork when future positions open up, if that’s of interest to you. The company values work-life balance and requires team members to live in a time zone between Los Angeles and New York, inclusive. The interview process includes a phone screen, values screen, technical interview, OpenTofu technical interview, and a paid trial day.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in software development, with a focus on Golang
  • Proven experience with open source projects, ideally in a leadership role
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal, and comfortable engaging with external members of the open source community as well as Gruntwork customers
  • Available ~48 weeks per year to work an average of ~25-35 hours/week
  • Extensive experience with building infrastructure, including cloud technologies and security best practices
  • Extensive OpenTofu/Terraform experience, including authoring modules and operating in production
  • Passion for DevOps best practices
  • Experience taking ownership of software, including defining features, planning work, and shipping according to plan
  • Productivity in continuously improving a massive project
  • Comfortable working with a team of remote engineers and able to break down problems and solutions
  • Good at testing well, balancing speed and coverage, and designing software with testability in mind
  • Comfortable using AI (e.g. using Claude, Codex, Cursor, Copilot, etc.) to investigate, generate and troubleshoot code
