GNC Software Engineer

Fortuna BMC•Titusville, FL

About The Position

You will develop the guidance and control software that carries a flight vehicle from ascent through atmospheric entry and an autonomous runway landing. Your algorithms and C++ code will be exercised in high-fidelity simulation, hardware-in-the-loop environments, and ultimately in flight. You will help maintain the six-degree-of-freedom simulation that the broader program depends on for design decisions and mission confidence. If you value simple, testable software and want your work connected directly to vehicle performance, this role offers meaningful end-to-end ownership.

Requirements

  • At least five years of experience in guidance, navigation and control, flight controls, vehicle dynamics, robotics controls, or flight-critical embedded software.
  • Strong C++ development skills and a solid foundation in control theory, numerical methods, rigid-body dynamics, and state-space modeling.
  • Experience developing or maintaining six-degree-of-freedom simulations and validating algorithms through software-in-the-loop or hardware-in-the-loop testing.
  • Ability to work onsite in Titusville, Florida, communicate technical results clearly, and develop straightforward, testable, maintainable code.
  • Bachelor's degree in aerospace, mechanical, electrical, computer engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent directly relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with flight-critical software, autonomous vehicles, launch vehicles, reentry vehicles, missiles, aircraft, or spacecraft is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, test, and maintain flight GNC algorithms in C++ for ascent, entry, terminal-area energy management, approach, and autonomous landing.
  • Build and maintain a high-fidelity six-degree-of-freedom vehicle simulation used for algorithm development, verification, and program decision-making.
  • Model vehicle dynamics, sensors, actuators, atmosphere, navigation inputs, and failure cases with appropriate fidelity for each phase of flight.
  • Design and execute software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop tests, analyze results, and resolve discrepancies between models, hardware, and expected performance.
  • Collaborate with flight software, avionics, aerodynamics, propulsion, systems, test, and operations teams to define interfaces and verify integrated behavior.
  • Support mission rehearsals, flight-readiness activities, console operations, and post-flight data review for test and flight events.

Benefits

  • Paid sick leave based on state regulations after 90 days of employment
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage after a waiting period (60% paid by Fortuna)
  • Free TeleMedicine and Mental Health support for all employees and their families.
  • Additional voluntary benefits: Group Life Insurance, Accidental Insurance, Critical Care, Short-Term Disability
