GNC Performance Engineer I

Relativity Space•Long Beach, CA
•$106,000 - $160,000

About The Position

The Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) and Performance teams define and analyze how Terran R flies, from liftoff to landing. Their work spans advanced modeling, orbital mechanics, software development, and dynamic systems to optimize each phase of flight. The teams develop flight algorithms, simulate trajectories, and model Terran R’s dynamic behavior across mission profiles. As part of the Integrated Performance team, this position contributes to performance across every stage of the mission. The role carries out engineering design trade analyses and uses the results to drive design decisions. It implements, maintains, and improves software tools in a variety of languages, from core simulation capabilities to peripheral analysis utilities. It also maintains, establishes, and may lead cross-functional collaboration with key teams across Vehicle Engineering.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate degree (BS, MS, or PhD) in Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field.
  • Prior experience with extensive cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced environment.
  • Notable coding experience in a modern programming language such as Python, Julia, Rust, or C++.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex analysis results, conclusions, and recommendations to facilitate rapid decision-making.
  • Familiarity with architectural design and analysis of launch vehicle or space systems.
  • Familiarity with trajectory design and optimization.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with advanced software development practices such as Docker, Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD), and dependency management.
  • Prior work in a startup or agile development environment.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out analysis for engineering design trades and drive design decisions based on the results.
  • Implement, maintain, and improve software tooling in a variety of languages, including core simulation capabilities and peripheral analysis utilities.
  • Maintain and establish cross-functional collaboration with key teams across Vehicle Engineering, and sometimes lead that collaboration.
  • Clearly communicate complex analysis conclusions and recommendations to facilitate rapid decision-making.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • Generous PTO and sick leave policy.
  • Parental leave.
  • Annual learning and development stipend.
