About The Position

The Global Transparency Senior Director will coordinate Oceana’s current work on expanding transparency in fisheries management, at-sea accountability, and market state powers and import controls. The Director will develop a global agenda for Oceana that guides our fundraising and communications efforts, and supports in-country campaigns to advance our shared agenda. The Senior Director’s role will operate across three different areas: Oceana’s global transparency work, US transparency campaigns, and the Coalition for Fisheries Transparency. Global Transparency The Senior Director will work closely with country teams who are campaigning for expanded transparency. The Senior Director will facilitate joint sharing and strategy meetings of the global Oceana network and will work with Oceana’s policy, communications, legal, science, and development teams to plan, track, and report on Oceana’s global impact on transparency. The Senior Director will represent Oceana in international coalitions and with decision makers, the media, and the funding community, as appropriate. The Senior Director will be an experienced communicator who can translate complicated policy and technical information into compelling talking points and campaign story telling. US Transparency The Senior Director will oversee the US Illegal Fishing and Transparency Campaign Director, providing strategic guidance to the team and integrating it into the larger global transparency work. Oceana campaigns are comprised of multidisciplinary teams that include science, policy, outreach, communications and legal professionals. Strong campaign skills, including campaign development, leadership and strategic thinking are essential to the success of the campaign. Coalition for Fisheries Transparency Oceana is a co-chair of the Coalition for Fisheries Transparency, (CFT), along with the Environmental Justice Foundation and Global Fishing Watch. The CFT is an international group of NGOs advancing fisheries transparency worldwide. The Senior Director will supervise the Coalition’s Director and serve as the Oceana liaison for the broader team including the senior policy manager, senior comms manager, and the senior outreach manager. The Senior Director will work with country teams to track Oceana campaigns and policy wins that align with the CFT Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency. The Senior Director will report to the Vice President of Oceana in the United States. The position requires flexibility to work in varied time zones and is based out of one of the Oceana offices, preferably in Washington, DC. Some travel is required. This is a full-time, exempt position. This is a two-year position with the possibility of extension based on additional funding.

Requirements

Thirteen (13) years of related progressively complex professional experience including at least five (5) years of managing staff and teams.
Must have exceptional management skills with proven ability to lead a professional staff and ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
Experience completing projects under tight deadlines and effectively managing a demanding workload.
Ability to work on and manage multiple projects in parallel.
Capability to effectively lead a campaign team.
Desire and ability to advocate for complex, aggressive conservation positions in both small and large settings.
Possess strong oral and written communication skills, and a keen analytical ability.
Strong writing and communications skills
Some travel is required
Working knowledge of fisheries and transparency policies with the ability to analyze proposals, provide recommendations, and communicate with decision-makers.
Ability to work collaboratively with staff, other organizations, and the public.

Nice To Haves

Masters degree in a related field is preferred
Fluency in Spanish or another second language is a plus.

Responsibilities

Lead an effort to develop a global transparency agenda for Oceana that guides our fundraising and communications efforts, and over time, assists country teams in identifying opportunities and raising funds for in-country campaigns to advance our shared agenda.
Facilitate cross-organizational learning by gathering insights from country offices, analyzing trends and obstacles, and translating lessons learned into actionable guidance for future transparency campaigns and efforts.
Identify strategies for international convenings and other global opportunities for Oceana to advance transparency policy objectives.
Develop and advise on campaign messages, approaches, and materials to advance fisheries transparency.
Compile Oceana’s impact on transparency to assist with reporting to Oceana leadership, board of directors and funders.
Work with Oceana’s global marketing and communications team, help develop storytelling, video assets, and other public relations materials in support of Oceana’s global transparency efforts.
Serve as spokesperson for Oceana on transparency with the press, decision makers, and other external audiences, as appropriate.
Ability to ability to analyze proposals, provide recommendations, and communicate with decision-makers about transparency policy.
Maintain a working knowledge of and policies related to illegal fishing and transparency.
Work with development team in fundraising for transparency to support Oceana’s in-country campaigns and global efforts.
Take on other responsibilities as appropriate and necessary to support Oceana’s campaign objectives.
