Glass Studio Instructor
About The Position
The Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA is seeking a Glass Studio Instructor to support the daily operations of its Glass Studio and provide high-quality educational experiences. This role involves teaching classes, workshops, and demonstrations, maintaining a safe and organized studio environment, assisting with equipment and kiln operations, and acting as a public ambassador for the museum and its programs. The instructor will also contribute to administrative and marketing efforts, and potentially create sample objects for programming. This is a part-time, non-exempt position reporting to the Glass Studio Manager & Programming Director.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience working in a glass studio or public educational studio.
- Significant experience working in and operating glass studio equipment.
- Extensive glass blowing experience.
- Must be comfortable and confident working in front of and communicating with the public.
- Ability to lift and carry supplies and other awkward items (including glass) weighing up to 75 lbs. without assistance.
- Ability to work in the heat throughout the 8-hour or longer workday.
- Weekend availability is required.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, or related discipline.
- Flame working, cold working, and casting experience.
- Prior experience teaching glass working.
- Woodworking, metalworking experience.
- Proficiency in Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and video skills.
- Knowledge of setting up and operating AV equipment (projectors, PA’s, soundboard, etc.).
Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the glass studio and its equipment.
- Support studio operations through shop organization and administrative tasks.
- Prepare for and participate in studio programming, including demonstrations, classes, workshops, and special events.
- Ensure the safety of staff, visitors, and users of the equipment by developing, following, and enforcing proper procedures.
- Properly open and close the studio, operate equipment, maintain cleanliness, and enforce safety protocols.
- Mentor Studio Assistants and ensure their productivity.
- Monitor rentals, blow slots, and college student shop time.
- Act as a first responder to equipment-related emergencies when scheduled.
- Design and fabricate custom equipment, and upgrade/modify current equipment.
- Assist with administrative and marketing efforts as assigned.
- Prepare, maintain, and participate in the studio’s operating schedule, including public and private demonstrations (acting as Gaffer and public speaker), special group and school demonstrations, educational public and private classes, after-school programs, Artist in Residence/Visiting Artist Programs, studio rentals, private lessons, performance events, and special event rentals.
- Serve as an ambassador for the Museum and the Studio, building public excitement and fostering collaborative programs with regional schools and universities.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of studio protocol, programs, and planning.
- Promote programming through public media.
- Create sample objects for the course catalog, class syllabi, displays, and other programming when assigned.
- Perform photo/video documentation of studio developments and highlights when assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required, demonstrating proactivity in the work environment.

- Studio Operations Rate: $16.50 per Hour
- Teaching & Demonstration Rate: $20.00 per Hour
