About The Position

This role involves leading Give it a Go hiking trips, specifically the waterfall walk and Pen y Fan. The ideal candidate will be an outdoor enthusiast with strong communication skills, a solid understanding of first aid, and health and safety protocols. The position requires commitment to specific dates throughout the autumn semester, with the possibility of additional work in the second semester. Responsibilities include ensuring the health and safety of participants, managing volunteers, providing first aid if necessary, delivering safety briefings, overseeing the smooth running of the trips, and managing equipment like walkie-talkies. The role also involves training volunteers on equipment use. The trips are weather and student-number dependent, and cancellations or rescheduling may occur. Workdays typically run from 9:30 am until the trip returns to the Students' Union (around 4 pm - 5 pm), with additional time required for pre-trip briefings and post-trip debriefings, which can be conducted in person or online.

Requirements

  • First aid training (ideally mountain first aid)
  • Confident public speaking in front of approximately 55 students, with and without a microphone
  • Ability to independently make safety decisions on the day of the trip
  • Ability to walk 6 miles in outdoor terrain (incline, footpaths and potential mud)
  • Willing to wear uniform

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for health and safety on the trips
  • Responsibility for management of GIAG volunteers on the trip
  • First aid if needed
  • Giving a safety briefing to all students on the trip
  • Overseeing the smooth running of the trip – taking attendance, making announcements on the microphone, speaking to students, working with coach drivers
  • Ensuring that walkie talkies are set-up, distributed to volunteers and returned
  • Training volunteers on their use
