About The Position

This position resides in the Property Assessment Division of the Department of Revenue. Duties include constructing and maintaining the cadastral mapping system and associated ownership information, parcel identification, and related spatial data, including the resolution of technical issues with the GIS (Geographic Information System). It also involves information technology support for the discovery, valuation, classification, and assessment of all real and personal property within a county or region, and administrative support work as required. The position does not supervise other staff. The Montana Department of Revenue administers approximately 40 state taxes, property appraisals, alcohol beverage laws, cannabis laws, and unclaimed property for the state of Montana. The Property Assessment Division manages Montana’s property assessment and valuation of all taxable property for property tax purposes. PAD is comprised of the Geographic Information System Unit, Program Support Unit, Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal Unit, Industrial Unit, Division Administration team, and approximately 30 local field offices in various counties in Montana.

Requirements

  • One year of post-secondary education or vocational training in cartography, Computer Assisted Design (CAD), GIS, business, auditing, accounting, or closely related field.
  • Two years of job-related experience.
  • Knowledge of deeds and legal descriptions.
  • Knowledge of the cartographic process.
  • Knowledge of cadastral mapping, GIS software, related data file formats, and Right-of-way information.
  • Knowledge of data sources such as aerial maps, Government Land Office (GLO), Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Public Land Survey System, and private surveys.
  • Knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Knowledge of the application of federal and state statutes, administrative rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Skills in research and analysis.
  • Skills in accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and written, verbal, and interpersonal communication.
  • Skills in Microsoft programs and other database applications.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Ability to provide timely customer service.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities under deadlines.
  • Must pass the department’s CORE Assessment training, within the first year of employment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be a primary resident of Montana.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.
  • Must successfully pass DOR tax and background check(s).
