Under general supervision, collects various field data using portable Geographic Information System (GIS) equipment; performs inspections of flatwork in the right-of-way; and provides assistance to the Chief Surveyor in drainage studies. Essential duties and responsibilities include collecting field data on City Infrastructure, performing utility locates, and locating fire hydrants, fiber optic cables, and sanitary sewer manholes. The role also involves assisting the Chief Surveyor with drainage studies, setting grades for culverts, and performing topographic surveys. Additionally, the technician inspects the construction of flat work in the right of way, including driveways, sidewalks, and curbs, and reviews design plans, GIS, and Google Earth for processing right-of-way construction and utility permits. Communication of deficiencies in permit applications and design plans with customers is also a key responsibility, as is reviewing revised plans to ensure comments are incorporated. The position requires field evaluation of utility conflicts and performing ROW construction Permit inspections for drainage and flat work to ensure conformance with approved plans and codes, with the authority to approve or reject concrete pre-pours. The role supports positive public relations and requires maintaining confidentiality. Employees may be required to work during emergencies to ensure public safety and restore vital services.
