About The Position

The City of Boynton Beach Internship Program is highly selective, seeking individuals with demonstrated potential to thrive in their chosen field. This project-intensive journey is for those currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program. This is an on-site internship with required field work, demanding adaptability to varied environments including indoors, outdoors, and project locations. The intern will work closely with the Asset Management Administrator and Senior GIS Analyst, contributing to the Utilities Department's Asset Management and Geographical Information System (GIS) programs. Candidates must possess a clean driving record and a full driving license, and will not work remotely.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college, or university, or have graduated within the past two years.
  • Candidates will not work remotely.

  • Talented, driven, and has a genuine interest in contributing to the success of the Utilities Department Asset Management and Geographical Information System (GIS) programs.
  • Solid PC skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics/Surveying, Asset Management, Environmental Science or Environmental Studies, Urban/Regional Planning, Geography, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Geospatial science, geoinformatics, or related interdisciplinary programs.
  • Knowledge & use of AutoCAD helpful but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, designing, implementing, and supporting Utility GIS applications in ArcGIS Online (AGOL), ArcGIS Pro, and Portal for ArcGIS.
  • Support a large-scale field data collection and asset verification initiative across the utility service area.
  • Respond to GIS map, data, and analysis requests in a timely manner and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Assist in reviewing and tracking the organization’s fixed assets.
  • Help coordinate the integration and maintenance of spatially referenced utility assets within asset management systems such as ArcGIS Online, Portal for ArcGIS, and Inframap.
  • Collaborate closely with the Senior GIS Analyst, Asset Management Administrator, and the Utility CAD/GIS Analyst.
  • Maintain data integrity, follow GIS standards, and uphold system security and confidentiality.
  • Assist with the implementation of the SpryPoint Software by supporting data preparation, basic configuration reviews, and system setup activities for utility assets.
  • Support asset data validation efforts by reviewing Excel forms, GIS records, and field data to identify discrepancies and ensure accurate transfer into asset management systems.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining relationships between assets (for example, linking components such as pumps, valves, and facilities) to support a structured and reliable asset hierarchy.
  • Gain hands-on experience operating Trimble DA2 GNSS equipment paired with iOS devices, applying best practices for high-accuracy GPS mapping across multiple utility systems.
  • Process, validate, and integrate collected utility data into ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, while applying QA/QC standards to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Understand how geospatial data supports engineering, asset management, and public works decision-making by creating maps, dashboards, and reports that directly aid city operations.
  • Build dashboards and progress-tracking tools in ArcGIS Online to present project outcomes and key findings to senior leadership.
